Deadwood
(2004/--) - Sol Star
HBO
website for Deadwood
Swiped from the HBO website: "Comin' out with your fly down
might strike the wrong note." Sol Star, offering business
advice to Bullock. An apostle of the private mercenary interest as an
organizing principle of behavior, Sol Star is a pure entrepreneur. He
is also the life-long friend of Seth Bullock. It was Star who urged Seth
Bullock to head out to the new camp in Deadwood. As Bullock's partner
in the hardware business, Sol handles most of the financial responsibilities
of the endeavor, and his enthusiasm and vigor complement perfectly Bullock's
decorum and self-possession. Deadwood Season 1 is available as
a DVD set.
More information on the real Sol Star.
I haven't been able to see this series, yet. Bummer.
From EJ:
Deadwood/Season 1 releases on DVD on February 8, 2005. Season 2 starts
on HBO on March 6, 2005. This series is an absolute MUST-SEE for John
Hawkes fans!!!
Episode: A Lie Agreed Upon, part 2
From SandyT:
Hawkes didn't much screen time in the premiere episode of "Deadwood"
Season 2, but he came out swinging in this one! Excellent performance,
and a real departure for the character, something that will definitely
change how we perceive Sol Starr in the episodes to come. I've been a
fan of Hawkes since his role as the enigmatic Padgett in the X-Files episode
"Milagro," and it's really wonderful to be able to see him in
a weekly show of this calibre. You absolutely rule, John.
Taken (2002) - Marty
Three generations of families encounter aliens. Hawkes plays Marty, one
of the subordinates for Captain Crawford, an investigator of the Roswell
crash. Hawkes is in the series for at least five episodes. He's a little
hard to recognize in his 'old man' makeup. Aired on the SciFi channel
in December. Also stars Steve Burton (ABC's General Hospital), Matt Frewer
(Max Headroom), and Heather Donahue (Blair Witch Project), and Dakota
Fanning, last seen in the Sean Penn film, I Am Sam. Available
on home video
For me, the best part was the first two generations. Everything from 'Charlie and Lisa' onward is dull.
24 (2001) - Penticoff, "4:00
to 5:00 A.M."
Kiefer Sutherland stars. Hawkes' character is involved in the kidnapping
of Sutherland's daughter. Television Without Pity says Sutherland
"wrestles with one hunky guy after another" in a hilarious
recap. To view Spunky's hunky-ness, go here.
As voted in one poll on favorite Darkrooms. Available on home

24 (2001) - Penticoff, "3:00
to 4:00 A.M."
Kiefer Sutherland stars. Hawkes' character is involved in the kidnapping
of Sutherland's daughter. (He should be called Plenticoff because
he lights a cigarette and promptly runs away with it still in his mouth.)
The series also guest stars Michael Massee, who appeared with Hawkes in
Playing God. Available on home video
From Leslie:
"Speak English, a**hole!" John plays an accomplice in
the conspiracy against Kiefer Sutherland involving the kidnapping of his
daughter. You don't see John for the first half of the episode, and for
the second half you mostly see him from far away, as he's involved in
a shootout with Sutherland and a female LA police officer. Towards the
end of the hour you finally see him close enough to recognize him, but
by then he takes the police officer hostage and kills her. Now that his
character is guilty of killing a police officer, a crime that carries
the death penalty in CA, he is willing to talk to Sutherland in exchange
for a lesser sentence. John also calls Sutherland the "A-word",
which usually gets bleeped out on network television but which must have
escaped the censors' notice.
Strange
Frequency (2001) - Jerry, "Cold Turkey"
A songwriter (Hawkes) suffering from addictions and writer's block, is
captivated by a mysterious woman who believes to be his muse. Patsy Kensit
co-stars. Available on home video. Click to see images

From Terina:
Amazing work, I was very impressed in how well he played the character.
He is a versatile actor, to say the least. I only wish the episode was
an hour instead of just a half hour. Highly recommended to all Hawkes
fans to check this one out. Aloha
Sam's Circus (2001) -Gunner
Television pilot. Stars Tyler Christopher, last seen on ABC's General
Hospital, and Kevin Connelly as well as Michael Greyeyes. Greyeyes is
another Millennium alumnus. He appeared in "Single Blade of
Grass". Check out Tyler Christpher's site, it features a clip
from Sam's Circus in RealPlayer format. It's a brief scene, and John Hawkes
isn't in it, but I included it because it is a film I'd like to see.
From Sherm:
I have seen this pilot, and I would say that it was as good or better
than "Band of Brothers" on HBO. John plays "Gunner",
and has a impressive role. One particular scene has John leaving a foxhole
to retrieve cigarettes from a fellow soldier's pocket who is believed
to be dead. He is then hassled because the soldier is not dead, just injured.
The rest of his group does not like the fact that he left him there to
die without telling anyone. I was really disapointed that the show was
not picked to be a part of this season's TV lineup, and from what I understand,
it doesn't look very promising for a mid-season run either.
Honolulu C.R.U (year unknown) - Unknown what role Hawkes plays.
Television pilot.
Planet Rules (year unknown) - Unknown what role Hawkes plays.
Television pilot.
Nathan Dixon (1999) (TV) - Russell Keach
Unseen. I have no idea what kind of character Hawkes plays. Apparently
this was a television pilot.
The Practice (1997) - Stuart Donovan, "Liberty
Bells" (episode # 4.20) Broadcast 5/7/2000
Young man on death row needs help from Ellenor. Conclusion.
From Anonymous:
John Hawkes was superb in this episode. His eyes carried the weight of
a man facing his own death, unable to do much to stop it, relying on others
to save him. The terror of the innocent in the face of apathy is horrifying.
He carried it off beautifully.
From Sharon:
A very good episode i thought, it must be hard to get emotional on cue
and John did it brilliantly. Actually i liked the show had never seen
it before good performances all round.
The Practice (1997) - Stuart Donovan, "Till Death Do Us Part"
(episode # 4.19) Broadcast 4/30/2000
Young man on death row needs help from Ellenor. Continuation.
The Practice (1997) - Stuart Donovan, "Death
Penalties" (episode # 4.18) Broadcast 4/9/2000
Young man on death row needs help from Ellenor.
Pacific Blue (1997) - Paul Brent
I have no idea what happens in this episode, nor whether Hawkes is victim
or villain.
The Magnificent Seven (1998), "Achilles" (episode # 2.8) Broadcast 7/16/1999
The X Files(1993) -
Phillip Padgett, "Milagro" (episode # 6.18) Broadcast 4/18/1999
Hawkes tried out for Pinker Rawls on the episode Trevor (6.17)
of the X Files, but Chris Carter offered him Padgett instead. Actually,
the role was written with Hawkes in mind, as Frank Spotnitz and Carter
"noticed a dignity and simplicity in his bearing that would prevent
the character of Milagro from becoming a caricature" --Andy Meisler,
The End and the Beginning, The Official Guide to The X Files, Harper Perennial,
Vol. 5. April 2000. Season 6 is a available as a DVD set,
and contains Milagro.
From Sharon:
I absolutely love John in this episode he is so georgeous, how do they
say it in America (he's got it going on). John has the most tremendous
sex appeal don't you agree, a great episode I highly recommend watching
it, you won't be sorry.
From Sandy:
Sigh. The episode that made me a Hawkes fan forever. This was literally
the only time in the whole series when I thought Scully should actually
ditch Mulder and do it with someone else. Her loss that she didn't. Hawkes
is beyond magnetic in this role, and that voice! Except for Duchovny and
Anderson themselves, his was the best reading of Chris Carter's intelligent,
somewhat florid writing. A classic.
Martial Law (1998/I) - Drew Simms, "Substitutes" (episode # 1.13)
Broadcast 1/23/1999
This show premiered the same year as Rush Hour hit the theater screens.
Coincidence?
From Leslie:
This show isn't very intesting, nor is it memorable (in fact, I don't
remember it at all from when it originally aired). It's a cross between
a cop show and a martial arts show, and stars Arsenio Hall. In this episode,
John Hawkes plays the sleazy lawyer of a Columbian drug kingpin who sneaks
back into the U.S. to kidnap his son from his ex-wife. Check
out his 'sleazy lawyer' wardrobe.
Brimstone (1998) - Willie,
"Executioner" (episode # 1.6) Broadcast 12/4/1998
A vigilante is turning people into crispy critters. Stars Peter Horton.
From Sharon:
Well i'll never look at electricity in quite the same way ever again.I
liked the story line good guy turns bad sort a deal worth a watch.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show (1997) - Fink, "Honey, It's No Fun Being An Illegal Alien" Broadcast 11/28/1998
Fantasy Island (1998)
- Arnie White, "Secret Self" (episode # 1.5) Broadcast 10/24/1998
Malcom McDowell stars as Roarke. This episode features the patented John
Hawkes drool. I couldn't get over the fake eyebrows when his horns first
start growing in.
From Sharon:
First off A BIG Thankyou to nobody who supplied me with this episode.
I loved the kissing scene (yummy) it looks like our John has an outy!!!
but i could be wrong, makeup affects leaves alot to be desired but Still
worth the watch. I still miss the original tatoo but John's performance
makes up for his absence.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) - George the janitor, "I Only Have Eyes for You" (episode # 2.19) Broadcast 4/28/1998. "Love is forever." Sarah Michelle Gellar stars. Available on home video.
From Leslie:
John Hawkes's screen time in this episode isn't as much as it should be.
He plays George, the janitor of Buffy's high school. The restless ghost
of a teenager who in 1955 shot the teacher he was romantically involved
with is forcing the population of Sunnydale High to reenact his crime.
George unfortunately becomes possessed and shoots a teacher. His scene
is brief, but very emotional. His facial expressions are great.
From Sharon:
A good episode i agree with Leslie on this one, more John time needed.
The Crow: Stairway to Heaven (1998)
- Jake Thompson, "Death Wish" (episode # 1.10)
Mark Dacascos stars as Eric Draven in the continuation of the Brandon
Lee film. The two actors also appeared together in Boogie Boy.
The Naked Truth (1995/I) - Duane Baldwin, "He Ain't Famous, He's My Brother" (episode # 3.9) Broadcast 12/8/1997. I wish I had been able to catch this one just for the concept. The loser Baldwin brother (Hawkes) is willing to tell all about his famous siblings. Stars Tea Leoni, wife of David Duchovney.
From Sandy:
John is very cute in this episode, albeit not one whit like any of the
Baldwin brothers. He seems very young in this (hell, he seems young in
nearly everything he does -- the man does not age) and his scenes with
Leoni are, well, wacky. He should definitely do more comedy. "The
Naked Truth" is being re-run on cable -- maybe on Trio? One of the
Nicks? Anyway, it's the same channel that's rerunning "Ned and Stacey,"
and this ep. is bound to show up sooner or later.
E.R. (1994) - P.A., "Ambush" (episode # 4.1) Broadcast 9/25/1997. Experimental live broadcast. The cast had to do two performances due to the time differences on the two coasts. The character he plays is part of the documentary film crew that 'ambushes' the staff of the E.R. George Clooney starred in From Dusk Til Dawn and The Perfect Storm. If you blinked, you can find a screenshot on this page: http://www.emergency-room-net.de/index.php3?ep=401&lang=en
From Sharon:
Shit!!! blink and you'll miss him, still a good episode if you're into
ER.
Nash Bridges (1996) - Vaughn,
"Lost and Found" (episode # 3.1) Broadcast 9/19/1997
Hawkes plays a car thief who steals an FBI vehicle full of weapons (!),
and tries to sell the booty. Also in this episode, one Rodney
Eastman, of King Straggler, as Hawkes' co-conspirator.
Millennium (1996) - Mike
Bardale, "The Judge" (episode # 1.4) Broadcast 11/15/1996
Chris Carter's lamented show, starring Lance Henrikson. This episode also
featured Marshall Bell as the Judge. Bell appeared with Hawkes in A
Slipping Down Life as Drumstring Casey's father, as well as Sand.
Season 1 of Milennium, including The Judge, is available as a
DVD set.
From Sharon:
Uumm, yeah well no wonder i don't ever watch this show still another knotch
under Johns belt i suppose. Didn't care for the hair doo in this show
but liked the art work on his body who ever got to do the makeup on John
had the best job in da world.
From EJ:
I was a big fan of "Millennium" and recently re-watched this
episode when Season 1 came out on DVD for the express purpose of seeing
John. He is amazing in this; totally chilling and convincing as a psycho
ex-con revenge killer for an even bigger psycho calling himself The Judge.
When John's character poured the beer over the back of his neck in that
scene near the end, I nearly went into a catatonic state of fangirl lust!
(BTW, did any of you "Deadwood" fans who have watched "The
Judge" recently wonder as I did if Mr. Wu's pig pen might have been
inspired by this episode?)
Promised Land (1996) - Jake,
"A Leap of Faith" (episode # 1.2) Broadcast 10/29/1996
Set in Roswell, but given a Disneyfied atmosphere. Beyond this, I have
no comment.
Dangerous Minds (1996) - Evan, "Bad Apple" (episode # 1.4) Broadcast
10/21/1996
Based on the Michelle Pfeiffer film of the same name.
Touched by an Angel (1994) - Mason, "Trust" (episode # 2.2) Broadcast 9/30/1995
The Marshal (1995) - Elton, "The Great Train Robbery" (episode # 1.3) Broadcast 2/11/1995
Wings (1990) - Mark the waiter, "Roy Crazy" (episode # 5.21) Broadcast 4/14/1994
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (1993) "Showdown" (episode
# 1.10) Broadcast 10/29/1993
The star is cult favorite Bruce Campbell. The two actors appeared together
in Congo. The episode is directed by the X Files' Kim Manners. Interestingly,
Campbell's own website
doesn't list Hawkes as a guest star for this EP.
From Leslie:
An appearance only slightly better than his turn in "Johnny
B. Good" (and unfortunately, that's not saying much). Mr. Hawkes
stars as the nerdy sidekick of a mute hired gun ("This here's
Utah Johnny Montana. He used to go by John Cougar Montana but he dropped
the "Cougar" because he thought it sounded pretentious.").
Hawkes' character does all the speaking for his silent sidekick, who accepts
an offer from the town's richest and meanest resident to kill Brisco County
Jr. Hawkes speaks in a silly voice with an even sillier lisp. Not one
of his better moments, but wasn't it Shakespeare who said "There
are no small actors, only small roles?"
Wings (1990) - Mark the waiter, "Business or Pleasure" (episode # 5.4) Broadcast 10/7/1993
From Sharon:
Have i got the right episode... "We only serve crabs"
"Who ordered the crab" I would of gone insane if he had
of been my waiter talk any slower and it would put me to sleep!!!! Still
just another day on the job ah John.
Northern Exposure (1990)
- Jason, the health inspector, "Do the Right Thing" (episode # 4.9) Broadcast
11/30/1992
I always liked that Moose in the opening. Holling sends Shelly out to
the movies with Jason in an attempt to keep the visiting health inspector
occupied with something other than his restaurant.
Mann & Machine (1992) - Tommy Chartraw, "The Dating Game" (episode # 1.2) Broadcast 4/12/1992
The form is unavailable due to SPAM. Some day it will return, but I don't know when.
Thanks to the IMDB for the list.
