The Best Game in the House

Poker is a game of chance. However, when you introduce the concept of betting, poker gains quite a bit of skill and psychology.(This isn't to say that there isn't skill at poker when nothing is at risk, there just isn't nearly as much).

7-card Stud

7-card Stud is the most popular low limit game for first timers to a poker room. Two cards are dealt down and one up to each player. The first betting round starts with the low card. Then another card is dealt up and another betting round, starting with the high hand. Repeat until four cards are face up. Then a final card is dealt down and a final betting round held. The highest hand wins. Most casinos spread as a $1-$5 limit. A $20 minimum buy is usually all you need to get started. When your feeling the need for a little advanced play, try Holdem.

Texas Hold'em

"Texas Hold'em", is a poker game in which each player receives 2 cards dealt face down, while 5 cards are dealt face up on the table. All players play with their best 5 cards, any combination of their 2 and the 5 on the table. The best 5 five card hand wins. Betting is started after 2 cards are dealt to each player. These are called "Pocket Cards". The next 3 cards are then dealt face up in the middle of the table and called "The Flop". Betting occurs again. The 4th card for the table, the "Turn Card", is dealt, followed again by betting. The final card is called the "River Card", after which betting resumes.

Holdem is usually played with structured betting, meaning you have to bet the preset limits. $4-$8, means the first two rounds are $4 and the secound two are $8. The Dealer Button - a white disc that moves from player to player each hand. It identifies the current dealer position as if that player were actually dealing the cards. The player to the left of the Button, has the small blind(1/2 of the lower limit) The next player to the left has the big blind(a bet =to the lower limit),So in $4-$8 holdem the blinds are $2 & $4 respectivly. After each completed hand, the Dealer Button is moved one player to the left. Most casino will spread this game in several limits,$4-$8,$10-$20,$15-$30,and so on. The buy-ins are usually 10 times the lower limit,so you can get in a $4-$8 game for $40.
