Glisten emerged at a crossroads I found myself at in 1996. I always seem to find myself in these situations, and the path chosen always leads to something musical and good. The last crossroads I found myself at led to Scrawl.
At the crossroads in 1996, I was faced with the dilemma of choosing between making a short film or embarking on a recording project. I chose the latter, based on the fact that I could record an entire CD for the price it would cost to make a ten minute film. And CDs can be sold! What would I have done with a ten minute film anyway? (This was years before computer recording was to become a reality for me.)
So, I got on the phone with pal Bruce Barre to set up a series of sessions. Over a period of some eight months, I began to piece together twelve songs that I thought would be the choiciest choices, with help from drummer/vocalist extraordinaire Chris Maruzzelli, his brother, the incredibly talented, left-handed-plays-right-handed guitarist, Steve Maruzzelli, and the gifted vocalist who would later become the bassist, Gina Gibbon.
As the sessions were nearing their end, we began to play a few live shows at the now defunct Rainforest Café in Tunkhannock, PA. This was an easy venue for us, mainly because I knew the owner, and we could play our set and wrap up early so that Chris could also play that night with his band, the now defunct Dead Letters. Unfortunately for us, the CD people wanted on those nights wasn’t ready yet, and by the time it was, performance was no longer possible.
Here we are, five years later, and production and marketing capabilities are making it possible to let the Glisten story be told. You can hear excerpts from Vault of Ardor at mp3.com.
