Information from the Gold Edition Starter Box

The clan's shugenja have noted a restless tension in the spirit realms. Something is approaching the mortal world ... a spirit of great power. Only with the guidance of the shugenja and the strength and cunning of the samurai can you determine the true nature of this powerful entity before your rival clans do, and turn it to the advantage of your daimyo. Surely, only your clan could put such a potentially powerful magic to honorable use.

You have been chosen for a special task. With the Emperor's passing and the entire empire on the verge of war it is imperative that you bring back anything that can give strength to your clan. You must choose a small force to accomplish your mission, but choose well. You may need not only the flashing steel of the samurai, but also the acrid smoke of the shugenja, to succeed. Remember this, that the information is vital. Fight if you must, but do not lose sight of the mission. It is in your honorable hands.

Storyline Effect

The clan that wins the "Seeds of War" event will discover a piece of information denied to the other clans. Imperial Assembly members of the winning clan will hear about the discovery first in their quarterly Clan letter. The clan that has the least amount of participation may be the target of the clan that wins the storyline event! Each clan will use the information to different ends:

* The Lion will go to war over it.
* The Crab will go to war with it.
* The Dragon will keep it a secret.
* The Phoenix will find new magic in it.
* The Crane will bring the information back to the Courts.
* The Scorpion will use the information against another Clan.
* The Unicorn will make an unexpected alliance because of it.
* The Shadowlands will corrupt and educate it.

Good luck! The story is in your hands...

Shadowlands Win At Gencon

Jon Rigby's Shadowlands deck defeated Conrad Jackson's Lion deck at GenCon this year.  Third place was taken by Britaine Babione, also with the Shadowlands.

Sezaru Corrupted?

This year's Winter Court was held at Kyuden Miya.  Emperor Toturi's children, the Four Winds {Toturi Tsudao (the Sword), Hantei Naseru (the Anvil), Akodo Kaneka (the Bastard), Toturi Sezaru (the Wolf)} try to influence the clans to support their claims on the throne.  Because of the Shadowlands victory, Sezaru was given a Miya Courtier as an assistant, who is really an Oni no Pekkle in disguise.  Only time will tell if he discovers this ruse or if he becomes corrupted as a result of the Pekkle.  See the story of Secrets on the Wind, Part 2 at Alderac's site.

Sneak Previews

A preview of Togashi Satsu in A Perfect Cut can also be seen at Alderac's site.
Yokuni's Legacy has a scan of Tamori Cheiko.  She's a tattooed shugenja who appears to be a Gold legal replacement for Agasha Gennai (useful now that the Gennai timing "tricks" have been errataed).

Webmaster Returns Home to Kyuden Mirumoto!

After meditating in the Mountains contemplating the re-licensing of Legends of the Five Rings back to Alderac Entertainment group, the prodigal son has returned briefly to update this long dormant site. His current duties require him to be away for extended periods of time so news reports will continue to be sporadic.

Gold Edition has been released in July.

- It's a HUGE set, having 541 cards. Collecting the set will be extremely difficult due to the number of cards involved.
- Rarity is now marked on the cards (circle=common, diamond=uncommon, star=rare).
- Foil rare cards are included randomly in the booster packs.
- Distribution of the foils is uneven, varying between "God" booster boxes having a foil in each pack to NO rare cards at all in some boxes.

- Gold Edition is set 20 years later.
- New artwork is seen on many cards.
- Starter cases hold 8 clans (Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Phoenix, Scorpion, Shadowlands, Unicorn).
- Each starter deck has a "Celestial Sword" except for the Shadowlands which has "Yakamo's Claw".
- The "Four Winds" cards are in each starter. It take the place of the Imperial Favor.
- All the other clans with or without a stronghold have been downgraded to "Factions".

- Two strongholds are printed on back of the starter boxes. For Dragon, it's Iron Mountain and Kyuden Hitomi.
- Stronghold cards are also included in the starter decks. They are regular cardboard, so no more Pearl Edition "spinner" silliness.
- The Imperial Favor is made less powerful, having been split into 4 parts.
- Gold & Honor requirements are generally higher than in Pearl Edition.

- No Kitsuki are in the basic set, though they are still around as quotes on the cards.
- Interestingly, there are also no Yogo personalities for the Yogo Towers (guess the Bayushi have some extra closet space until the Yogo return ;)

The Dragon Clan Letter was released. It's by our daimyo, Togashi Hoshi.
A new Gold Bordered promotional card was included in the Imperial Assembly mailing, Chiang-Tsu.

Hitomi Caeldiin, Hida Togeriso, Mirumoto Shokan & others have written a Dragon Clan Oath.  So far Hoshi has made it optional and has not required every Dragon Clan member to take it. ;)
