Broken Harts--Part One

The sun was just starting to rise, as Jonathan lay there looking at Jennifer. She was the best thing that ever happened to him. He had no idea where he would be today or what kind of man he would be if she had not entered his life. She had changed his life in so many ways and changed him in a way the he had never imagined. He was wondering what kind of parents they would make. He was really excited about her being pregnant and he could not believe how sexy she was seven months pregnant. She was always sexy but there was just something that he could not put his finger on. Jennifer was starting to wake up.

" You're staring at me," she said in a raspy voice.

" No I'm not. I am looking at you and wondering how I got so lucky."

" So lucky, right. I'm retaining water and I look like Shamu, I have never been this fat in my entire life."

"You are not fat, you are beautiful. I thought I couldn't love you any more than I already do but every day you continue to surprise me."

" Really? You will not feel that way in a few weeks when I am really fat and cranky."

"You doubt my words?"

" What time is your business meeting over?" She asked as she walked towards the bathroom. A place that she was becoming very familiar with lately. She looks at herself in the mirror and says to herself , "You're getting fat, Jennifer. What on earth does he find so attractive?"

"Two!"

"What?" she asked as she came out of the bathroom.

"My business meeting! It is over at two."

"Oh."

"What are you thinking?" he asked her.

"Nothing really. I am just trying to figure out a good time to meet you."

" Meet me! Meet me for what?"

"Darling. we have some shopping to do. We have a nursery to prepare."

Jonathan knew his wife well enough to know what she was thinking and he loved to tease her. "What time should we meet?"

"Well I should be finished with lunch around one."

"Ok then, we will meet around three," Jonathan said to Jennifer.

" Ok, three it is," she said to him. "Lets go eat breakfast. I am sure that Max has prepared a great one."

Jonathan is waiting at the baby store and wondering where she is. It is not like her to be late, especially seeing as she was finished before him. He thought she would have had every thing all picked out and be planning on how to set up the nursery. They had the crib and other things in the baby's room and he wondered what else they needed. Basically he was trying to keep his mind off the fact that she was almost two hours late. He had called the house and Max had not heard from her. " Where could she be," he wondered.

The paramedics were working very hard to save not one but two lives. They had never experienced anything like this. They were wondering if they were going to survive. Just a moment before everything was fine. Jennifer had left the restaurant and was looking forward to seeing Jonathan. Her lunch had been good-- it was great to see all her old friends again. They could not believe how great she looked. They never thought of her as the motherly type. She remembers the weekend well. Jonathan had packed her things and surprised her for their anniversary. He took her to the place they first made love. He did forget to pack a few of her things. Her birth control pills being one of them. She never imagined that she would get pregnant. They had a great sex life but that was not the most important part of their marriage. She loved the way they were together. They became one. He was so compassionate and he was always there for her. He listened when she talked and they talked about everything. He really valued her opinion and took her advice seriously. Everybody who knew them, and those who did not, could tell just by looking at them that they were the perfect couple.

Jonathan went back to the office wondering if he had misunderstood her. He was not expecting what was coming next.

" Harry what brings you here? You are out of your district aren't you?"

Harry just stood there. He was shifting from one foot to the other. He was uneasy about being there. He really did not want to tell Jonathan why he was really there.

"Jonathan this is just about the hardest thing I have ever had to do."

"Harry just say what you came to say."

Jonathan was starting to worry. He felt a knot in his stomach and a lump in his throat. He knew it was not good news. The look on Harry's face said as much.

"There has been an accident."

Jonathan felt his knees go from under him and the next thing he knew he was just sitting on the floor. He felt the tears well up in his eyes.

"Jonathan, the car Jennifer was driving was hit head on when a drunk driver ran a red light."

"Oh god, no it is not true! You are mistaken, it has to be someone else."

"Jonathan, believe me I really wish it wasn't true."

Everything was a blur and Jonathan really did not hear any thing after that. A few moments later, Jonathan stood and straightened himself up. He excused himself and went to the mens room to splash some cold water on his face. When he returned he asked Harry to take him to the hospital. When he got to the hospital the doctor was waiting for him.

"Mr. Hart, your wife and unborn child are in serious condition."

"How bad is it?"

"The impact was so severe that Jennifer's stomach hit the steering wheel causing blunt trauma to her abdomen."

" I don't understand."

Jonathan had an idea that it was really bad and he was trying to compose himself and listen to what the doctor was saying. It was hard though, he knew that the most important person in his life was slipping away from him and there was nothing he could do to help her. He had promised her that he would always protect her and never let anything happen to her. How could this have happened?

"When she hit the steering wheel the placenta separated from the uterus. Both your wife's and your baby's life is at risk. We have to operate to save them, do I have your consent?"

"What?" Jonathan only heard half of what the doctor had said.

"Do we have your consent to operate?"

"Doctor, you do whatever you have to do to save my wife's life. Do you understand me?"

" Yes Mr. Hart, I think I do."

Jonathan signed the proper papers and then went to the small waiting room just outside of the operating room. Harry could see how distraught he was and called Max to let him know what had happened. When Max arrived he could not believe how bad Jonathan looked. Jonathan looked up at him. Max just hugged him and said "Gee Mr. H, I'm real sorry."

Jonathan knew he was, it was genuine of Max and he did not show affection often. It was just known how the two men felt about each other. Max went to get some coffee and Jonathan went to make a phone call he knew he had to make. The phone rang and rang, just as he was getting ready to hang up someone picked up.

" Hello."

Stephen Edwards had been in the stables and was on his way back to the house when he heard the phone ring.

"Hello," the angry voice said again.

"Stephen, it is Jonathan."

Stephen could tell by the tone in his voice that something was wrong. He was sitting by this time and could not believe what his son-in-law was telling him. He had just talked to Jennifer last night. She was so excited and was looking forward to his visit after the birth of his grandchild.

" Stephen, do not worry about a thing. I have already sent the Hart jet and I will have a car waiting for you when you arrive."

Jonathan knew that he was not in the best of health and he did not like the idea of telling him over the phone.

"Thank you Jonathan."

"I will see you when you get here then."

Jonathan hung up the phone and was wondering what was going on. But nothing could prepare him for what was about to happen.

Jonathan went back to the waiting room. He hated being away. What if the doctor came out and nobody was there to talk to him. He though about the night that Jennifer told him she was pregnant. He smiled at the thought. She had Max prepare a special dinner; she had waited well past three months. She had had problems in the past carrying a child past 13 weeks and she could see the disappointment in Jonathan's face each time she miscarried. She knew he wanted a child. He wanted to be the kind of parent his parents never had the chance to be. The night was well planned. It fell on Father's Day. She had bought a special gift, something Jonathan could pass on to a child, his child. The child that was created out of the love they share. She hoped that he liked the watch she had bought for him. It was an antique pocket watch. It was the perfect gift for the perfect night. She especially liked the engraving-- To my daddy, with love, two hearts have now become three.

Jonathan was happy at the fact that Max was gone for the night. It was nice to have his wife to himself; he valued the private time they shared together. The dinner was lovely, his favorite-- prime rib, roasted potatoes, and chocolate mousse for dessert. He was wondering all through dinner why she was not drinking. It was not like her not to have a glass of wine with him.

"What's with the water?" he said.

" What do you mean?" she said with a smile.

" It is just not like you to not enjoy a glass of wine with me."

" Well in a minute it will all be perfectly clear."

Jonathan was wondering what she was up to. She always liked to surprise him and that was one of the things he loved about her. She poured the coffee and handed him the gift.

"What is this?" Jonathan asked.

"Can't a wife buy her husband a gift?"

She watched as he opened it. She knew he would instantly understand the meaning. There was no card, she just knew he would understand and love the gift. He slowly removed the paper and opened the box. He just looked at the watch. It was exactly like the one he described to her. He remembered his father always had it with him.

" Darling this is beautiful, where on earth did you find it?"

Jonathan had tears in his eyes, he could not believe that she remembered the watch. He had told her when they first met about the watch that his father always carried with him, and how he always said "one day it will be yours, my son."

" I do not know what to say. I can not believe you remembered, thank -you."

Jennifer smiled at him. She knew that the watch was the perfect gift.

" There is an inscription on the back."

He turned over the watch and read the back. He read it again just to make sure he had read it right. He smiled at her and instantly knew the meaning behind the watch. She remembered everything and that was just one of the reasons he loved her so. Jonathan stood up and came towards her; he embraced her and told her how much he loved her. They went upstairs and made love like never before. Two hearts once again became one.

The operating room staff was preparing everything for the surgery. If either one of them survived this it would be a miracle. Jennifer's own obstetrician was on her way. She had received the call and could not believe what she had heard. It was a blessing that she became pregnant and the fact that she was able to carry the child this far without complications was a miracle. How was she going to get through this?

As she arrived she saw Jonathan and Max sitting in the waiting room. The look on his face said it all. She walked up to them….

" We will do everything in our power to save them both."

"I know you will Doctor Peterson." Jonathan said.

The operating room was prepared when Margaret Peterson walked in. She was scrubbing in remembering the day that she told Jennifer that she was pregnant. She had only known Jennifer for just over five years, but it seemed that they had been friends for a long time. She could not believe how pale she was. Her blood count proved that she had internal bleeding. She just hoped that she was in time. She was afraid that only one of them would survive. She knew that a child could not survive this long with out a large oxygen supply. Jennifer was having a hard time herself fighting to survive, how on earth was a baby going to survive. Her vital signs were stable, a little lower than Dr. Peterson would have liked, but she was not going to be picky. The blood was ready. They all knew that they had a bleeder. Time was not some thing they had a lot of. There was not a large supply of Jennifer's blood type. She had a rare type, A negative. That is what made the fact that she carried for this long, with out complications a miracle. They started to prepare for the C-section, none of them sure as to what they would find.

The nurse came out to the waiting room to hand Jonathan Jennifer's wedding band. She said that she would come out with updates as often as she could. Jonathan thanked her and placed the ring around his chain so it could be close to his heart.

Stephen Edwards boarded the Hart jet. He was in shock and could not wait to see his daughter. He had to see her to know that she was ok. She was so much like her mother; She was smart, beautiful, and an honest person. Everyone who came in contact with her just fell in love. Men always stared and women always admired her. He grew to love Jonathan. He really did not like him at first. Maybe it was because they wedded so soon after meeting and he really did not go about it the proper way! In Stephen's mind the man always asked the father for his daughter's hand in marriage. That is the way he did it and that is how he pictured it would be with his daughter. He did not expect a phone call saying "Pa I'm getting married on the 27th of September. Can you make it?" It was evident how much in love they were and how much he really loved her. He never saw much of them. Maybe twice a year, but every time he opened a magazine or a newspaper there they were. He could tell by the look in their eyes that they only had eyes for each other, and he grew to love Jonathan like the son he never had. His mind quickly returned to the present and he knew that he was determined that his daughter was not going to die the same way her mother did, as a result of a drunk driver.

Jennifer's blood pressure and heart rate was very, very, low but the doctors knew that the only way she was going to survive was to do a C-section. The blood was already infusing. They knew that the chances that the baby would survive this were slim, even if it was still alive. Once they were inside they worked as quickly as possible to finish. They were working against time and time was something they did not have a lot of. They took the baby and the signs were not good. The apgar scores were below normal and the team worked quickly to save the baby.

Jonathan just sat there wondering what was going on. He wanted a child but he needed his wife more.

He wondered if she would ever get over this. This was going to be devastating and she was going to need him to help her get through this.

The neonatal staff on hand were working harder than ever to save the life of the infant. The baby was blue and not breathing. They were doing everything in their power and every thing they had been trained to do.

The surgical team was experiencing their problems. They could not control or stop the bleeding. They knew that there was only one way and for that they would need consent. Dr. Michael Kramer went out to talk to Jonathan. Something he was not looking forward to but he knew as well as the others it was the only way she was going to survive.

" Mr. Hart."

"Yes." Jonathan said.

"We have run into some complications; the only way we can stop the bleeding is to perform a total abdominal hysterectomy."

"Dear god."

"I am sorry I know that you are not in the best frame of mind but we need your consent in order to do the procedure. Mr. Hart? Did you hear what I said?"

"Yes I did, and like I said before you do what you have to do to save her life; yes you have my consent to perform the procedure."

As Dr. Kramer stared to walked down the hallway Jonathan yelled out "What about my baby?" He just raised his hands and said "We are doing everything we can, we will let you know."

The neonatal team finally stopped they knew that there was nothing left to do to save the baby. The baby girl had not survived. They were working hard to control the bleeding and after they had finished the hysterectomy the bleeding had finally stopped. Her blood count was really low and her vital signs were not that great. The team was afraid that she would go into hypovolemic shock. She needed fluids and blood. They were not sure that they had any more of her blood type. They knew the worse was yet to come. Would she survive this, how would they explain this to her, and how were they going to tell her husband not only was his wife gravely ill, but his daughter had not survived. None of them were looking forward to this.

Jonathan had been in the waiting room for 7 ½ hours. He had not heard anything and he was really scared as to what was going on in there. He had know idea what he would do if he ever lost her. She was his whole life.

They had just finished closing up Jennifer as the doctors made their way to the waiting room. They were about to tell Jonathan the bad news. "Mr. Hart; your wife made it through the surgery but the next 24hours are going to be critical, she lost a lot of blood and she is very weak."

"Can I see her?" Jonathan asked.

"Well we are taking her directly to the critical care unit, once she gets settled you will be able to see her."

"Ok that will be fine, doctor. What about our baby?"

"Mr. Hart the infant went without oxygen for a very long time, we did everything we could to save your daughter but all of our efforts failed. We are terribly sorry, if you need anything at all please do not hesitate to call us."

"It was a girl?" Jonathan knew that it was going to be difficult to tell Jennifer the truth but he knew that he had to be the one to do it. He did not want anyone else to tell her. How was she ever going to get through this; how were they going to get through this; however they got through the important thing was that they would get through it together.
