Broken Harts--Part Four

Deann called Lou and Stanley to let them know that the trip to London has been postponed. Lou was not really surprised he expected as much. He has worked with Jonathan for many years and he knew that the moment he met Jennifer, Hart Industries would take a back seat to his marriage. He had always put Jennifer and their marriage first. It was one of the things he admired him for. All the other CEO's were always putting in late hours and never at home and if they were they took the work home with them. Jonathan never took his work home. He always left the work at the office and spent his time at home with his wife. Hart industries seemed to have great rises since Jonathan married Jennifer. When the news first hit that they were getting married everyone thought Hart Industries would suffer or she would divorce him and take him for half his worth. Truth is, Jennifer was the best thing that ever happened to him and she was never really interested in his money. She was an accomplished writer and came from a very good family. Her father was an art dealer and her late mother had been a model and a freelance photographer. Both her parents were from England. She was very worldly. She spoke many languages and had a very good education. Not only was she beautiful but she was smart.

 "Hart Residence."

"Hello Max, this is Stanley is Mr. Hart there?"

"No he ain't here I'll have him call you when he gets in?"

"Ok Max that would be great tell him I have the information he was looking for. I am sure he will be very shocked at what I have for him."

 "I'll tell him."

Jonathan was driving up the road to the house; he went through the gate remembering the first time he brought Jennifer to see his house. He wished she were there to greet him at the door or playing the piano, which she did often.

As Jonathan opened the door Max greeted him with a drink and the message that Stanley had called. Jonathan wasted no time calling him back.

"Yes Stanley I heard what you said. I had a feeling but I was not sure. Thanks Stanley as usual you came through and believe me it will not go unnoticed."

"No problem Mr. Hart. I always enjoy doing research for you especially if it helps you and Mrs. Hart and when people are buying up Hart Stock."

"Thanks again I will see you in the office in the morning."

Jonathan hung up the phone and sat on the couch.

 "Problems Mr. H?"

"Not any more Max, not any more."

What time would you and Mr. Edwards like to eat tonight Mr. H?"

"I am in no hurry Max whenever Stephen gets here is fine. I'll let him clean up and then we will eat."

"Ok Mr. H." Max walked away he knew Jonathan well enough that he would tell him what was happening when he was ready to. He and Mrs. H always told him stuff when they were ready and he proved to be a big help…he had many connections.

Jonathan headed upstairs to have a shower he needed to release some of the days stresses and usually one of Jennifer's massages did the trick but today a shower would have to do. He lost track of time and when he returned to the living room, he found Stephen there reading the paper and sipping a brandy.

"Stephen when did you get in?"

"Not too long ago. I went upstairs and cleaned up a little before dinner. Max told me you had just gone up to have a shower. How was your day?"

"Not bad actually I was actually given a wealth of information and it is going to come in very handy if I play my cards right."

"Jonathan you have lost me. You mentioned earlier that you wanted to talk to me. Does what you found out have anything to do with it?"

"Yes it does. I would rather discuss it over dinner though Stephen. I wonder what is taking Max so long with the meal. Please excuse me for a minute."

Jonathan walked in to the kitchen Max was just taking the steaks off the grill.

"Hmmm smells wonderful Max."

"Almost ready Mr. H. are you two ready to sit up?"

"I will go get Stephen. We will be seated in a minute."

Jonathan returned to the living room. Stephen was still reading the paper.

"Ready for dinner Stephen?"

"In a minute Jonathan. I want to read you something from the paper first."

"It was announce late last night, that the driver of the vehicle that hit the car that Jennifer Hart was driving resulting in the loss of her and her husband unborn child was an Englishman here on business for his company. It is reported in the stock trades that an English corporation is buying up large quantities of Hart Stock. It is undetermined at this time if the two are related."

"Jonathan is this what you want to talk to me about?"

"That is the jest of it but I really want to talk about the guy who is running the company in England."

Max entered the room and told them that the food was on the table.

"It is such a nice evening out I though you two might like to eat out side on the patio."

"Max you really should not have gone to all this trouble although it sure does look nice."

Max served up the meal and then asked Mr. H. if he minded if he left early.

"No Max not at all. You have a big night planned?"

"Ya Freddie called there is a big poker game going on and so I though I might attend."

"Have fun Max just remember what happened the last time you went to one of those big poker games."

"I will Mr. H although I do not plan on losing this time."

Jonathan and Stephen sat and enjoyed their dinner. Jonathan broke the silence first.

"Stephen what can you tell me about a man by the name of Bradley Chambers?"

"Bradley Chambers? Now there is a name I haven't heard in many years. He is an old boyfriend of Jennifer's they broke up not long after they graduated high school. I never really cared for him. Don't really know why I just never liked him. Does he have something with what is going on?"

"I think so but I have to prove it first and I really do not want to jump the gun and risk the chance of ruining this."

"Jonathan I never really cared for him but I do not think he would do something like this."

Max parked the car and walked through the double doors of the hospital. He was nervous he hated hospitals and never made a point of visiting. Even in the past when the Mr. H was blind and the time when Mrs. H hit her head and spent the night in the hospital he never visited. He waited until they came home. He always associated hospitals with death. Both his parents had died in hospitals and he just could not go into one.

He got off the elevator and walked down the hall towards the room. He really did not know what to expect but by the way Mr. H and Mr. Edward's were talking it was not good. He walked in the room and was shocked at what he saw. Jennifer was sitting by the window doing a crossword puzzle.

Jennifer looked up from her puzzle and smiled.

"Max I thought you hated hospitals what are you doing here?"

"I was on my way to a poker game and thought I would stop by to say hi! And see how you are doing. By the way your dad and Mr. H are talking I was expecting you to look a lot worse. How ya doing Mrs. H?"

"I am ok Max, really I am getting better each day and thinking how grateful I am to be alive and have people around me who love me and care about me. How about you how are things at the house? How is Jonathan getting along with my dad? I do not think they have spent so much time together. It is a little scary."

"Fine Mrs. H just fine you don't have to worry about them just worry about gettin' out of here. Mrs. H

I'm real sorry it is just not fair. Why do bad things happen to good people?"

" Sometimes things just happen and at the time we do not understand but I believe that things happen for a reason and when time allows we find out what the reason is. Thank you for coming Max it means a lot to me that you came."

"My pleasure Mrs. H. Well I must be going, take care I am looking forward to you returning home."

As Max is walking out the door Jennifer calls out to him.

"Max how is he really doing? Is he eating and sleeping? I am worried about him. He comes in here and I can tell by the look on his face that this is tearing him apart."

"He ain't too bad Mrs. H. I think he is just feeling bad that's all."

"Does he talk about it Max?"

"Not really Mrs. H. people call and he tells them you are ok. Getting better and stronger which you are.

He is ok Mrs. H you are both dealing with this in your own way. But I think it is time that you dealt with it together. You have to work through this together. She was his child too Mrs. H."

"Jennifer looked at him with tears in her eyes. Thank you Max. You are the most caring, sweetest, kindest man I have ever known. You do not have a bad bone in your body. We are lucky to have you in our lives."

She hugged him before he left and was glad that he came for a visit. She watched him walk down the hall and get on the elevator. She walked to the window at the end of the hall and watched him walk to the car and drive away.

Stephen and Jonathan took their coffee to the living room.

"So does Max always go out and play poker?"

"Believe it or not we pretty much run the betting office here in the kitchen. He will head out to his game after he visits with Jennifer. Max does not like hospitals but knowing how he feels about Jennifer I figured he would go to visit sometime soon. So Stephen you never finished telling me about Bradley."

"Well Bradley was a young man with a troubled past. He was always trying to get his parents attention but somehow he always got the attention of the police instead. His father had worked up the ladder at an Electronics company. He eventually became CEO of the company. His wife not use to the money and the new house started spending time at the country club trying to get in with the "in crowd" poor Bradley was left behind. His father sent him to the all boys' school just up the road from Jennifer's; figuring it would be good grooming. He met Jennifer and they started dating. All her friends told her he was trouble but she said they just did not understand him. They dated all the way through high school and at the end of their senior year they broke up. She came home and that was that, she did not want to talk about it and we never discussed it again. I will tell you that she changed when they were dating. She became withdrawn, I think he was very controlling and I think it was better that it ended when it did. We had the best summer that year I got to know my daughter and we became close again. I really enjoyed it. We had not been that close since before her mom died."

Jonathan looked at Stephen taking in what he had just heard. "This could be awkward he though to himself." He looked at Stephen and nodded and sipped his coffee.

"Well Stephen it is getting late and I think I am going to call it a night. I have really enjoyed you being here these last few days. Thank you."

"Well Jonathan I have enjoyed visiting. I can tell you really love my daughter and you are good for her. She will come around. You have brought out the best in her."

"This is the last call for British Airways flight 716 to Los Angeles, California. All passengers should make their way to the gate."

"Would you like a paper sir?"

Bradley looked at the stewardess and smiled. "Thank you do you have the LA Times?"

"Yes we do? Are you visiting or on business," she asked.

"I am going home to marry the woman I have always loved."

"Congratulations!"

Well Jonathan Hart I am willing to fight you for her, how much is she worth to you. I am looking forward to watching you suffer as you slowly lose everything that means so much to you.

This fight is just beginning and Jennifer my dear this time we will be together forever. I warned you once what would happen if you ever left me and I think it is time that I proved to you what is going to happen if you try it again. You belong to me you always have and you always will. No one can come between us.
