~*Hammon Up The Game*~

Welcome to Hammon Up the Game, a website for NY Liberty star guard Becky Hammon! I'm Laura and am a huge fan of Becky Hammon, so I decided to show it by creating a fan site for her. Well, its WNBA 2002, and we all know what that means: a new season is right in the thick of things! Becky went over to Italy for a couple months in the offseason and showed everyone what she's got, and it's great to see her in action with the Liberty again! Even though the team isn't as consistent as past years, they're still lethal and can come in and kick anyone's butt on any given day. Although Becky and the team weren't able to capture a title last year, we all know they won't disappoint this year. Enjoy, and please be sure to check back often for additions to this site =)

March 10th: Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates lately; school is a pain! So are you wondering what Becky is up to these days? Well, she signed a deal in late February to go play in Italy and is there right now! In her first game she kicked some major butt, as she scored 28 points! She will be in Italy through March and perhaps April. New pictures, from Becky's official site, have been added here; click here to see them! (Continue on through the pages to see all the new pics)

Can't wait for the WNBA season? Neither can I! But the NCAA's are heating up, and I have to give a big "good luck" out to my team: the UConn women!

March 11th: Happy birthday, Becky! Our favorite player is now as old as her jersey number-->25! Hope you enjoy the year of the "big" 2-5! :-)

March 17th: In one of Becky's recent games in Italy, she scored 16 points. Way to go, Becky!

Any of you have any thoughts about Becky or the WNBA in general? Have any poll ideas that can be put up on the site or any stories that would fit one of the site's sections? E-mail me with any of your b-ball thoughts!

Also, regarding the graphics I have here on the site, I'm not sure who can see them or who can't or if it's just my horrible computer! So just FYI, if you can't see them, just go into the Guestbook and click the 'Back' button on your browser to return to the main page; that should bring the graphics up. Blah, can't computers be such 2-cent-pieces o' junk??! :-)

April 26th: Hi guys, sorry once again for the lack of updates! Becky returned from Italy a few weeks ago after a very successful season on her team, Rovereto. In three of her games, she scored 18, 19, and 17 points respectively. Training camp for all teams begins on Monday, and by then there'll be a lot more info. on Becky; I'll be sure to keep on adding stuff!

In news regarding the Liberty, Grace Daley, Andrea Nagy, and Rebecca Lobo have all been traded to different teams :-X Grace and Rebecca are now playing for Houston, while Nagy's new team is Sacramento.

May 1st: Training camps have opened league-wide! So what did Becky do during Media Day? She made sure to keep her teammates entertained with new dance steps she learned over in Europe, for one thing! Go to the liberty's official site to read up on what happened as well as see some pics!

May 7th: Tonight, at MSG, Becky, Camille Cooper, Tari Phillips, Tamika Whitmore, Korie Hlede Sue Wicks, Crystal Robinson, and Linda Frohlich were present to sign autographs and hang with fans who purchased tickets today at the box office. One of my friends went and took great pictures; I've posted the one she was able to provide me already up in the pictures section of the site--Check it out, along with another recent pic provided by the Liberty!

May 18th: Well, the preseason games for the Liberty have come, and by today, gone. In their first game, against the Mystics, the Libs fell 66-61 behind 5 points and 6 assists from Becky. On Wednesday in Houston, unfortunately we lost again in a very poor outing, with the final score 69-51; in that game we trailed by as many as 31 points, and the shooting woes continued. Becky chipped in a team-high 10 points in that game. Finally, in last night's rematch against Houston in New York, we turned around the domination factor and controlled the game through effective full-court pressing and 19 points from Vickie Johnson. Despite the game being extremely woeful shooting-wise, we came away with the win, 62-47. In a very humorous moment at the very end of the game, Becky received a long pass from the other end of the court for a driving layup attempt to beat the buzzer; unfortunately, though she flew through the air with the greatest of ease, our favorite player MISSED the layup; that fondly will go down with her little shoe incident last season ;-) Here's a picture of Becky in the middle of that shot. I'll be posting new pictures from the team's three exhibition games, so keep checking in!

June 17th: Well, the 2002 season is in full swing, as the Liberty are 7-3 at this point. In their season opener in Los Angeles, they lost a tough battle by the score of 72-64. Vickie Johnson led the team with 19 points. In the following game, at Portland, we creamed the Fire 84-62 behind 22 points from our very own Becky! Those 22 points was the game high. We became 2-1 by defeating Seattle easily in Key Arena, using tough, aggressive defense and overall play. Becky chipped in a solid 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals in that win. In our first home game of the regular season, the winning continued, as the Liberty beat Eastern Conference rival Miami by the score 58-52; no brawl between T-Spoon and Debbie Black this time, though!

In the following game, New York squeaked by now 0-9 Detroit, 60-59, to become 4-1 on the season; Becky had an off-shooting night, as she was 0-5 from the field, including missing all 3 of her three-point attempts. She finished with 2 points. Moreover, we lost in our next game against the Fever, by the score of 71-62, but picked up another "W" by beating Detroit for the second time on the following day; in the losing effort against Indiana, Becky had provided 5 points on 2 for 5 shooting from the field, and in the second Detroit matchup, chipped in a great 17 points and 2 rebounds. After next defeating Utah out in Salt Lake City 71-68, Becky gained her first start of the season against Sacramento on June 13th; unfortunately, the team fell to the Starzz in a tough double-OT, by the score of 78-77. Lastly, in their most recent game, the Liberty defeated another Eastern Conference foe, the Charlotte Sting, in MSG. The game came down to the final 11 seconds, where then-scoreless Crystal Robinson scored her only points of the game by sinking 2 free throws to give the Liberty the decisive lead. The Sting missed an attempt at the buzzer, though they protested there was a foul at the end....OH WELL!

Now that I've updated you all on the Liberty's games thus far, more pics will be added to the photos section, I promise! Comments, questions? Just e-mail me at Hoopgal05@aol.com!

June 22nd: Well, last night the Libery took on Cleveland, and unfortunately did not play well on the offensive end and lost. In 21 minutes, Becky played a solid game, contributing 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal!

Everyone go vote for Becky to be an All-Star! She's completely deserving of that, as she's the ultimate team player with great individual skills, too! Don't underestimate the power of #25! (Credit to that saying belongs to Kelly.)

June 30th: Last day of June, what's new with the Liberty, you ask? Well, on their June 23rd match-up at Orlando, we lost a halftime lead and didn't play well in the 2nd half, as we lost 77-65. Becky got in foul trouble in the first half, and ended with 4 fouls and 2 points in 11 minutes.

The team got on track for the June 25th contest against Indiana at MSG, leading to a 74-55 creaming of the Fever. Becky played very well, contributing 12 points and 4 assists off the bench in 23 minutes!

July 6th: Hey all, how's your summer? Well, the Liberty's season is pretty much caught in between good and "blah", as they are currently 9-8. In their June 28th matchup against Cleveland, Tari Phillips poured in 18 points and 9 rebounds, while Becky chipped in 8 points and 2 rebounds, as New York lost 67-58.

We followed up that game with yet another loss to Portland at MSG on June 30th, playing a low-scoring, sloppy game. The final score was 54-44, and Becky managed only 2 points; however, she did contribute with 2 rebounds and 2 assists!

In the midst of a two-game losing streak, the Liberty hosted Sue Bird and the talented-but-underachieving Seattle Storm on July 2nd. Hyped up due to the excessive amount of fans in the Garden rooting for hometown girl Bird, the Liberty were aggressive and effective on offense as well as defense, and they defeated their opponent 74-63. Becky did a solid job on Sue Bird when defending her; despite shooting a mere 2-9 from the field, Becky had 2 assists and 3 rebounds. With this energized and refreshing win, New York moved to 9-8.

The Liberty's next game is coming up on July 8th, as we host the Phoenix Mercury. Hopefully the Libs will keep up their regenerated energy!

July 11th: In the Liberty's July 8th game against Phoenix, Tamika Whitmore scored a career-high 28 points to help defeat the Mercury 77-71. Becky played 20 minutes and went 6-9 from the field to contribute a solid 14 points. We improved to 10-8 on the season with that win!

Unfortunately, the Libery lost yesterday's early match-up against Detroit, by the score of 66-63. In an EXTREMELY freaky situation the night before, the team's commercial plane was cancelled, forcing the team to spend hours in the airport; they managed to return to New York for a few hours sleep but needed to catch a 3:30 a.m. flight Wednesday morning in order to reach Detroit for an 11:30 a.m. tip (yes, folks, 11:30!!!). Coach Adubato called the first several minutes of the first half for the team being "in a coma", and that it wasn't until they "spotted" the Shock the first 12 points before they started to wake up! Considering the travel complications, Adubato said he was proud of how his team played and battled back throughout the game. Becky played 16 minutes and contributed 6 points and a steal. With this loss, the Libs moved to 10-9 overall. Our next game comes on the 13th and is nationally televised on NBC against the red-hot Mystics at 1:30 p.m. EST. Be sure to tune in for a great Eastern Conference match-up!

Pictures from this season are in the process of being added to the site, so keep checking through the photos section.

July 13th: Today the Liberty played possibly their best game of the season, routing the Eastern Conference leading Washington Mystics 67-53. Led by Vickie Johnson's 18 points, we survived a mini-comeback by the Mystics in the second half; Becky played very well, contributing 5 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals!

To check out some new pictures in the Photos section, click here.

July 17th: So, do you like MTV? Even if you despise it, as I do, be sure to tune in on the 22nd to see, you guessed it, our very own Becky Hammon! Becky appeared on Direct Effect yesterday to discuss the WNBA's involvement with Sears' Breast Health Awareness and the league's ongoing auction to support the cause; her episode will be aired on Tuesday! Sorry about previously giving incorrect details about Becky's appearance, but I was very misinformed by a few sources :-X .
