IMHO - The ramblings of Phil Speranza

Phil is publisher of the longest running New York Yankees fan site on the Internet http://www.behindthebombers.com and did the 2000 season update of The Yankee Encyclopedia 5th Edition published by Sports Publications LLC.

Greetings Bomber Buddies, the cuts are being made and the team is playing better as we finally got a good outing out from the Cuban Missile, Jose Contreas. Andy Pettitte looked great against the BoSox as well. Jeff Weaver also pitched five scoreless in his last outing. Joe Torre has stated that Contreas will start the season in the bigs. He also stated that Weaver will be his #5 starter. You do the math, Sterling Hitchcock has had a poor spring.

I would like to thank Mike Piazza for stealing the back pages away from Boomer. Is it a coincidence that the Yankees are settling down after that? I think not! The Yankees made their decision and fined Wells $100,000 for his remarks in his book. Who wins in that case? Everyone!!! The publishers win for all the publicity the book got which Wells will make back and then some. The charity that receives the $100,000 wins as well. And the Yankees win by putting an end to the circus that the book caused. The aftermath, Boomer is denying all the allegations in the book saying he was misquoted. This book is also scheduled to be released in an audio version. Will David be narrating it? I don't know. If it is, how can you deny anything then? David Cone who has pitched two perfect innings this spring with the Mets (yes he can still get Gerald Williams out) said on "Mike and the Maddog" radio show that there was no way Boomer was drunk when he pitched his perfect game, hung over, maybe. Hey David, after he co-wrote his book, former Yankees lefty Sparky Lyle read the final version. And he tried to avoid hurting people. Good idea? Ya' think?

Hideki Matsui is learning English from Derek Jeter. He couldn't have picked a better example of Yankees pride.
Cablevision and YES finally came to an agreement. It will cost Cablevision viewers either $1.95 or $4.95 extra monthly to see their Yankees. The later package includes Fox Sports and MSG Network. I still find it hard to pay for a channel that has commercials. In defense of Cablevision, their subscribers paid for their sports packages all along. This was not true for Time Warner or Direct TV customers who get those stations as part of the basic package.

My predictions for the 2003 season: Raul Mondesi will have a big year no matter where he is playing. Nick Johnson will put up big numbers, but won't elude the DL. The Rocket will end his career with 302 wins. Can somebody tell me why Jorge Posada can't block home plate? Maybe he is just scared of getting dirty or hurt. Munson may be his idol, but he is no Munson. Flathery has clearly beaten out Widger as the back up catcher, but Widger has the guaranteed contract. Joe Torre has not completely ruled out the possibility of starting the regular season with three catchers. Look for Widger to at least start the season as Jorge's back up. The Yankees hope they can slip Flathery through waivers so he can play in Columbus.

Finally on a somber note, my well wishes go out to Tug McGraw and his family as it is reported that he is in the hospital in Florida with what is believed to be brain cancer. Tug "Ya Gotta Believe" now more than ever!

That's it. Just IMHO.
Here is hoping that all your base hits go for extra bases.
Until next issue...
