Phoenix Festival 97

17th - 20th July 1997

Long Marston, Stratford-Upon-Avon, England

Great festival. Arrived on Wednesday with a ticket but my "girlie-to-be" (cute one I met at Glastonbury) didn't have one. Wandered around car parks trying to get a ticket but nobody was selling and touts were charging upwards of 90 pounds for the 75 pound tickets. (**** that!) I took her stuff in and she waited outside with another guy we met in the same dilemma (hi John!) until late at night when the two of them braved the fences and ran across the floodlit security compound. They got in, with one nasty moment caused by falling off the fence at a strange angle. They completely ignored my directions of where I was going to camp (I couldn't possibly have given crap directions!) and I found them at 1am in a completely different field getting heavily stoned. I was so relieved when I found them, and we went back to the tent (not John, he wasn't my type!).

I awoke with a smile on my face, it was going to be a great festival.

Spent Thursday morning selling programmes with Zeb, and generally getting into the festival spirit

Missed the start of Fun Lovin' Criminals (and they would have to play Scooby Snacks, the only one of their songs that really works live, first so I missed most of it), but they were definitely better than the last time I saw them. Great stuff. Also saw Skunk Anansie and Republica, who were both about average (I've seen them both play better) and checked out Urusei Yatsura. Beth Orton wasn't anywhere near as good as when I saw her at Brighton, the stage seemed a bit big for her. Shane McGowan was his usual "entertaining" self. Anyone who's seen him live will know what I mean. David Bowie was superb as usual. Can't remember what else I heard.

Spent hours and hours (or so it seemed) waiting for Robert Newman to appear at about 2 in the morning to read a bedtime story. I was really looking forward to this as I had visions of Winnie the Pooh at Green Belt 96 (you just had to be there) but he read a deadly serious story, and I wasn't in the mood for it at 2:30am
