Tolerance is a dying concept in today's society. Productivity has
become all to important, while workers rights and needs, have become a
lesser priority. Today's employers have demanded not only more work,
but they also want faster. Almost any new work equipment has been
based on this fact. This new work strategies includes: construction
equipment, computers, and any new methods for producing products.
All this equipment, while making the job easier, also created a need for
fewer people, and also gave employers something they really wanted:
fast, cheap labor. In this way, technology spawned a new, less tolerant
society. Speed and efficiency are the driving forces for technology,
and people begin to expect these amenities to help them solve problems
and work faster. If they are not provided, there is a problem with
productivity.
In this
way, the Industrial Revolution caused a less tolerant society. One
that demanded more work for less, and speed and efficiency as well.
The Industrial Revolution was a time where technology was on the rise,
and newer faster ways to accomplish the same goals were set into action.
This rise in technology was a mixed blessing. On one hand, it created
a more advanced society, with more efficient ways of accomplishing the
same goals, but on the other hand this made society come to expect this
efficiency and speed. From the start, technologies driving force
was speed, trying to match the ever-shortening patience of the general
public. This desire for faster speeds was ever expanding, and still
is.
This
all began far before many would believe, around 1733 in England.
The "invention" of a group of people all working toward the same goal,
in a factory-like environment. This was
just the beginning of the "technological revolution." Another major
technological advance was the assembly line in 1901. It was based
on the same concept as the first factory, having many job specific workers
all making one part or doing one job. This was a concept used over
and over, and is still in use today. In fact, there aren't many businesses
where this is not common practice in some form or another.
