She slowly made her way into the little kitchen of her apartment and turned on the coffee pot, going to the bathroom to take her shower while her coffee brewed.
As she dried her hair Grace continued to think of the night before. The amazing look on Chris’s face as he stood up on that stage, the smile she had missed so much. The guy who always made her laugh, no matter what kind of day she was having. It was something she had missed having in her life and couldn’t have been happier to have back.
Grace tied the string on her green scrubs and slipped on her clogs, a routine she had grown to know and enjoy the past year. As she walked down the small hallway into the living room she grabbed her keys out of the dish on the table next to her door and her jacket off the rack before leaving for her day of work and school.
“Grace, you have a phone call,” She heard Chris stay from behind her.
“Who is it?” She questioned him.
“I don’t know, some guy with a high voice,” He laughed as Grace smiled knowing whom he was taking about. “Hello?” She asked, picking up the phone on the main desk.
“Hey Gracie girl,” She heard his and couldn’t stop the smile that took over her lips. His voice was like an angel signing in her ear.
“Hey, Chrissy, what can I d for you? I have to work so make it quick,” She told him.
“When are you out of school?”
“In about a week, why?”
“I want you to come see me after you’re done,” He told her excitedly.
“Chris, I can’t just come see you, I have to work.”
‘I thought you only had to work during the school year.”
“Yeah, at the hospital but I have another job you know, I don’t have an easy life like you I have to work more than one job to get my money to pay the bills.”
“Sorry, well, can you give me a week between the hospital and this other job?”
Grace thought for a minute. “Alright, I’ll give you a week, but only because it has been so long since I saw you, are you going to be here?”
“No, we’ll be in Wisconsin, and when you leave we’ll be in California,” He answered her.
“Chris!” She almost yelled. “I can’t afford to get a plane ticket to Wisconsin and back to Washington, I’m sorry buddy, but this won’t happen, I have to go now, I’ll be home tonight at about ten or so, you can all me then, bye,” Grace told him, hanging up the phone before he answered.
Every time he had seen her butterflies started fluttering in his stomach, his palms got all sweaty and couldn’t stop smiling, why were thing so different? All he wanted was her friendship again, the best friends they always were and said they always would be.
He had to get her out to see him, not matter what. He knew what he would do. Chris picked his cell phone up once again and dialed Grace’s number at home. He knew she wouldn’t be there so he would leave her a message on her machine so she couldn’t say no.
She had to laugh, Chris always knew how to get her. She picked up the phone and dialed his cell phone.
“Hello?” She heard him answer.
“So, you decided to go ahead and do something nice for me ha?” She asked him.
“Well, ya know< I try every now and then, so, you going to come?” He asked hopefully.
“I don’t know, free plane tickets and everything?” She pretended to contemplate. “I guess I could do it.”
“YES! I love you! I can’t wait, I got to go see you next week, bye!” He said excitedly.
“And what exactly would that be?” JC asked, intrigued by the excitement his friend held.
“Remember Grace who was at our concert in Washington?” He asked them all, seeing a few nods. “Well, I got her to take a full week off work and she’s coming out to see me!” He started jumping with excitement as he saw his friend sit there with blank stares on their faces. “Don’t you get it?” He asked them.
“No, I don’t think we do, but is her cute little friend coming with her?” Justin asked, feeling a slap on his arm. “What was that for?” He asked Cait as she gave an evil stare and he just stuck his tongue out at her.
“She’s my best friend and she’s coming to spend a week with me!”
Still, nothing seemed to register on their faces, “Ok, never mind, obviously I’m the only one who’s excited about this, well, anyways we’ll have another female on tour with us for a week next week,” He told them, not quite as excited anymore as he turned to leave.
“I don’t get it,” Justin said with a confused look on his face, looking around at everyone else in the room who seemed to feel the same.
“I don’t think any of us do, but I think our boy Chris has a little bit of a crush,” Cait suggested, a smile playing on her lips.
“Oh her!” Suddenly he remembered. “That’s the girl we were all teasing him about and he swore he didn’t like her, oh, I get it, ok,” Justin said, smiling with pride for himself. “That one! Oh, maybe he’ll make his move this time, he definitely needs to, man don’t have much longer before he can no longer pro-create,” Joey said as everyone laughed.
“This should be an interesting week, I’m excited now too,” JC said as he felt the mood in the room rise.
“I know it, I can’t wait to find out what he does, if he doesn’t make a move on her maybe I will, that should get his attention right?” Lance said as everyone looked at him like had five heads.
“Please, he won’t need you to do something to get his attention, so please don’t,” JC pleaded with him.
“Alright, but I’m still waiting to see what he does, this is going to be a good week”
