One of my hobbies is electronics. I have not designed the following circuits. They don't do exactly the same effect that KITT's scanner has, it is a bit more complicated since the 1st light has a tail, you will understand if you build it.

For those who don't know how to solder and have no knowledge in electronics but still want to try to build this I suggest you get a book or search on the internet.

My Comment

Circuit 1 This schematic is my version of a simple 10 LED chaser. There is no 555 timer used because at my local electronics store they are over $4 Cdn. Instead, an oscillator made up of two sections of a 4011 NAND gate is employed. This chip is very inexpensive and extremely common. This is a pretty nice led chaser(scanner). It is very cheap i built it for under 4$.The ICs are very easy to find. But it does not go back and forth, it goes and it restarts from the beginning.
Circuit 2 (The 1st one on the page) The bi-directional sequencer uses a 4 bit binary up/down counter (CD4516) and two "1 of 8 line decoders" (74HC138 or 74HCT138) to generate the popular "Night Rider" display. This is a almost complete replica of Knight Rider. But I found it pretty complicated...
Circuit 3 (the 4th one.)

N/A

This one is like the 1st one. It may be a little bit easier to build but also costs more. It does not go back and forth.

Circuit 4 (3rd one on page) The circuit below uses a hex Schmitt Trigger inverter (74HC14) and two 8 bit Serial-In/Parallel-Out shift registers (74HCT164 or 74HC164) to sequence 16 LEDs. This one is somewhat like the 1st one but more complicated and it has 16 leds. It does not go back and forth.
