The Genies were the sole representative from Arizona. RESULTS FROM SATURDAY'S POOL PLAY: Amberlee Tialino scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Genies to a 40-34 victory over the Connecticut Wave in the team's first-round pool play contest in Nashville. The teams were tied at 20-20 at halftime before the Genies slowly pulled away for the victory....RESULTS FROM SUNDAY'S POOL PLAY: Tori Sheaffer scored 22 points leading a parade of double-digit scorers as the Genies raced past the Roswell (Ga.) Lady Hornets 85-65 in second round pool play Sunday morning. Alyssa Heeman posted 20 points, Cara Bomar added 15 and Ashton Jones chipped in 12 as the Genies jumped to an early lead and never trailed. Sheaffer also contributed 10 rebounds; Heeman added 11 assists; and Jones posted 12 rebounds giving the Genies three players with double-doubles. In the Sunday nightcap, Heeman scored 12, Sheaffer 11 and Tialino 10 to lead the Genies to a hardfought 48-44 victory over the previously undefeated MYBA (Md.) Wildcats. The game featured fast-paced action from start to finish and was not finally decided until Bomar iced things with two free throws with four seconds remaining. The win gives the Genies the Pool H title with a 3-0 record. MONDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET RESULTS: Alyssa Heeman scored 14 points, including two crucial free throws with five seconds remaining, to give the Genies a 46-42 victory over the Indy (In.) Wildcats and a berth in the Elite Eight of the double-elimination Championship bracket. The Genies built a five point halftime lead, but were outscored 7-0 to open the second half. However, Shana Davis converted a momentum-turning three-point play at the 12-minute mark and the Genies never relinquished the lead from that point. Next up for the Genies is the Virginia Heat Basketball Club, Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Allen Arena on the campus of Lipscomb University. TUESDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET RESULTS: The Genies saw a 15-point second half lead disappear beneath a barrage of Virginia Heat three-point field goals and ultimately lost their first game of the double-elimination tournament 59-57. The Genies led 32-22 at halftime and built the lead to 44-29 before the Heat sharpshooters found the mark with five three-pointers. The Genies were led in scoring by Tori Sheaffer with 14 points, Alyssa Heeman with 12 and Ashton Jones with 11, but it was not enough to overcome a series of late-game turnovers and poor clock management decisions. The Genies are now one game from elimination and must win twice on Wednesday to continue play. WEDNESDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET RESULTS: Tara Rickenbach's two free throws with eight seconds to play in double overtime gave the Genies a dramatic 74-73 victory over the Georgia Pistols, and kept the one-loss Genies alive in the double elimination Championship bracket. As they did the night before the Genies rolled to a big second half lead, this time 18 points, before the opposition mounted a furious comeback in the final minutes of the game. This time, however, the Genies withstood a last-second shot at the end of regulation; missed their own last-second shot at the end of the first overtime; and then came back to win after the Pistols had taken a one point lead on a banked three-pointer with 21 seconds to go in the second overtime. Alyssa Heeman led the Genies with 21 points, while Rickenbach added 15, Cara Bomar posted 13 and Amberlee Tialino scored 10. In Wednesday's nightcap the Genies fell behind early and never recovered in falling to the Louisiana Fire by the count of 79-73, and finished in 7th place in the 52-team national event. The Genies trailed by as many as 20 points before rallying late, but could get no closer than six points. Amberlee Tialino tied the Genies all-time club mark with 25 points, and Cara Bomar broke her own club record by sinking six three-pointers and finished with 19 points to lead the team in scoring. The 5-2 tournament mark gives the Genies, winners of two of the past three Arizona AAU state championships, a final 2006 record of 36-19.
