The basic coat color (black, bay, chestnut, etc.) of the roan horse is silvered by a mixture of white hairs, intermingled from birth with the darker hairs of the base color. While grey horses first develop white hairs around their eyes, roan horses show their basic color on lower legs and face. Roan can vary tremendously, From Strawberry Roan (roaning on chestnut) to Blue Roan (roaning on black).
