Hart to Hart:
A 20th Anniversary Surprise--Part One

It was a beautiful day in California and a most perfect time for the Harts to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. But, things were going to change all of that. A certified letter was delivered to Jennifer that was from Walter’s daughter in Maryland. Walter was still living in Steven Edwards’ home after Steven had passed away. This was the understanding and this made Jennifer happy to know that her Dad had this in his WILL for Walter, since Walter was with the Edwards family long before Jennifer was born. The letter was a sad letter only to say that Walter had passed away in his sleep. Jennifer took this very hard as Walter was like a second father to her especially when her father was in Europe and not around when she needed a father.

Jonathan had planned a wonderful 20th Anniversary with a trip up to the Old Bears Inn in Napa Valley, the place where they spent their honeymoon, and they would spend the entire weekend in room #7. The Harts own the Old Bears Inn and room #7 has been made up specially for them with the same furniture except for the bed which was Mimi’s bed and that went off to the Museum in France.

From there they were going on to Hawaii and spend two weeks on Maui. They were meeting friends there and they had planned a most enjoyable time. But, that had all changed now as Jennifer wanted to go to Maryland to attend Walter’s funeral. Jonathan had agreed this was the right thing to do, but, he was quite concerned about Jennifer as she does not handle these things too well, ever since Max’s death.

Jonathan had called the Manager at the Old Bears Inn and explained that the trip for the weekend would be put on hold and the Manager understood. He contacted his friends in Hawaii and they too understood, and said they would still be there when the Harts arrived.

Jonathan had contacted Walter’s daughter and had told her they would be arriving at the house the next day. She was very pleased over this, as she grew up with Jennifer. Jennifer always considered her as part of her family.

The next day the Hart Jet was ready for take off and they flew into Dulles, for the sad journey to the farm where Jennifer grew up. Walter’s daughter was there to greet them, and Jennifer took Walter’s death very bad. Jonathan was quite worried about her, and told her that she had to get hold of herself, as he knew Walter would not want her to carry on like this. She was consoled by Jonathan, and handled the rest of the services pretty well.

Jennifer had to make a decision about the house, and told Jonathan that she wanted to keep it for awhile and have the caretakers take care of the grounds. Since Walter’s daughter was widowed and on a small income, Jennifer talked to Jonathan and told him that she would like to have Jeannie, that was her name, stay in the house until she decides what to do with it. Jonathan agreed and said what ever you think is best darling, it is your house. Jennifer said, I knew you would say that, and reached over to kiss him.

Jonathan and Jennifer stayed a week in Maryland and had things left in good hands with Steven Edwards’ Attorney. They had taken Jeannie out for dinner that night, at Steven’s favorite restaurant and left the next morning, the Harts were anxious to get back to California to go on with their 20th Anniversary plans.

Upon their arrival home, Jennifer was very tired and seemed to be having this tired feeling for some time now. Jonathan had suggested that she go see the family doctor, but Jennifer being very belligerent refused to go. Jonathan was quite concerned about her, thinking that the trip to Maryland was just too much for her to handle. Since her bone marrow transplant in Germany was a strain on her, although, she kept up with her check ups, Jonathan insisted that she go to the doctor again before their trip, she agreed, only to satisfy him and make him happy. But, Jonathan said, I am going with you. She laughed what’s the matter, don’t trust me?

Jonathan had to go to the office the next day, and Jennifer stayed in bed as she was very tired. When Jonathan arrived home, she was still in bed, and this he did not like, therefore, he called Dr. Colby and made an appointment for the next morning. Jennifer didn’t want to go, but to make Jonathan happy she agreed.

Jonathan and Jennifer went off to see Dr. Colby. He did some tests, and said the bone marrow transplant was not her problem, Jennifer, Dr. Colby said your pregnant. Well Jonathan went bananas and Jennifer was stunned. A baby, Jonathan she said, when we got married you promised me one event after the other, but, I never believed it would be this. Jonathan was disappointed as he thought Jennifer didn’t want to have a baby. She laughed at him and said darling, thank you for getting me pregnant….but, she was really ecstatic. The baby was due around the time of Jonathan’s birthday which is on the 10th of February.

Jonathan proceeded to spoil Jennifer, and was driving her completely crazy. He wouldn’t let her go anywhere alone, when he couldn’t take her, he insisted that James drive her. Poor Jennifer it was like having a shadow; they laughed over it, and with some vitamins, Jennifer was feeling much better, and was ready to go. They agreed to start their celebration within the next week.

Jennifer had gone out shopping alone, and while she was at her favorite boutique shop, she was not feeling well, and decided to head for home. She sat in the car for a while, and decided to call Jonathan at the office. He was upset that she was out alone, and said he was on his way. When he got to where she was he noticed an ambulance, and Jennifer was in it, and headed for the hospital. Jonathan had called Dr. Colby, and he met them there. Jennifer unfortunately had a miscarriage, and she was devastated as she knew how much Jonathan wanted a baby. Jonathan had told her that it is not that important, as long as you are okay, and we are together. Dr. Colby spoke with Jonathan and told him to take her away for awhile, she really needed to have a good rest, she has gone through a lot and a rest with tender loving care will do her good and she will be fine. Well the Anniversary trip couldn’t have come at a better time.

Jennifer was released from the hospital, had lots of rest and feeling much better. She had to go see Dr. Colby, for a follow-up. He did some tests, and the tests showed that with Jennifer’s age, she would have had trouble carrying the baby full term; most likely spending most of her pregnancy in bed. Jonathan joked, that’s okay Dr. Colby that’s where we spend most of our time anyway. Jennifer was embarrassed and said "Jonathan". Dr. Colby responded not that kind of bed rest. Jonathan said, who rests hiding his disappointment and holding back tears. Dr. Colby left them alone in the examining room for a short time…Jonathan and Jennifer embraced. Jonathan cried for both the baby and Jennifer. Jennifer said, I am so sorry darling. Darling, it is not your fault he said,

we will get through this together. Dr. Colby came in with bad news, I am sorry but, there will be no more pregnancies for you. Both Jonathan and Jennifer were stunned, they embraced and said we have each other with tears in their eyes.

Jonathan knew how upset Jennifer was and consoled her with tender loving care. It was just all too much for her, Walter, the pregnancy, and then this. But, she said time heals all wounds, and I will be fine. She had recovered completely, and they would go on with their lives, and love each other even more.

The morning they were to leave for the Old Bears Inn, Jonathan checked with his office and all was fine. Jonathan woke up Jennifer with a kiss, and handed her a small box…happy anniversary darling…it was an anniversary ring with 20 diamonds. Jennifer was thrilled, and told him to check under his pillow. Why he said, just look she said. It was Steven Edwards’ gold chain watch which she found at the house after Walter died. Jonathan was ecstatic…to think that he would be able to fill Steven Edwards’ shoes. As far as Jennifer is concerned he filled them twice over. I love you darling he said, and kissed her, and she responded with a kiss, and they spent a few more hours in bed. They loved each other so much, and those few hours were heaven.

He kissed her and said, we had better get going, Frank will be meeting us at the Jet by 2:pm…she laughed and said let him wait. Jonathan said, oh, I love you…and they made love again. Okay she teased him, that’s enough, we want to save some for the Old Bears Inn…Jonathan responded with a that will not be a problem…they poked each other, took showers and were ready by noon.

Jennifer looked beautiful, she wore a white skirt, black top and black and white jacket and black heels. Jonathan said, darling you look beautiful and went to kiss her, and hugged her tight, she giggled and said Jonathan I thought we had to meet Frank at 2…oh okay he said, I’ll save it - they kissed and went down for brunch that Maria had prepared for them, after which, James drove them to the airport with Freeway, Jr. going along for the ride.

Jonathan kept asking Jennifer if she were okay, and she replied Jonathan, please stop it I am fine. I just want to make sure that you are he said, and bent over to kiss her.

The Hart Jet took off for San Francisco, and the Napa Valley. There they spent the most exciting time of their lives. They made love in room #7 and drank the most delicious vintage from their vines. Jonathan didn’t even as much as call his office as he knew all was well with Stanley Freison in charge. They took long walks through the vineyards, and met some very nice people. Jennifer did get very tired at times and had to rest throughout the day. Jonathan was quite worried about her, he called Dr. Colby, and Dr. Colby said she is fine, she just has to get her mind off of losing the baby which was eating away inside of her.

She sat very silent at times and did lots of thinking. She came up with an idea at one point…Jonathan I know where we can go for Christmas. Where he said, she said let’s go to the Mission Street Orphanage and play Mr. & Mrs. Santa like Max did when he was around. Are you sure this is what you want to do? Yes, she said. Well, let’s discuss that close to Christmas, right now let’s have a good time.

Jonathan said, tomorrow we leave for Hawaii, are you feeling all right, "Jonathan", she said, one more time and I will bop you, oh I’d like that he said, I always like when you touch me. The Hart jet was at the San Francisco airport waiting for their limo to arrive. The Harts left the Old Bears Inn with a big send off by the Manager and a case of their best vintage. Come again the Manager said, both Jonathan and Jennifer said together, "we sure will". The limo took them from the Inn to the airport - Jennifer looked radiant, dressed in a tan suit, her favorite color, but, Jonathan liked her in blue. Jonathan looked just as handsomely, also in a tan suit. Both wore matching tan shoes. They met Frank at the airport and were off to Maui. Lunch was ready for them with chilled wine…ooh, Jennifer said how romantic, Jonathan bent over the table to kiss her. After lunch, they both changed into something more comfortable for the 7 hour trip to Maui. Jennifer picked up her novel and began to read and dozed off….Jonathan was happy to know that she was resting, he worried so much about her. Jonathan went over the reports that Stanley had faxed to the jet from Hart Industries for him to go over. Jonathan found them in good standing and faxed them back to Stanley. He called Stanley to tell him the reports were on their way back and thanked him for doing a great job. After which, Jonathan sat back to relax for the long journey, and was deep in thought worrying about Jennifer..but, he knew she was strong and would come out of this fine…he also thought about the last night at the Old Bears Inn…it was a night to remember…he reclined his seat and took a nap.

Their arrival time to Maui was for late afternoon…both woke up about the same time from their naps, showered and dressed before the plane landed. Frank said Mr. Hart we are ready to land. They landed on time, had a limo pick them up to take them to the Hart Executive Condo, their friends Mike Davis and his wife Barbara were waiting for them, they greeted each other and then Jonathan and Jennifer went off to their suite. Jonathan telling Mike that he would see him in a bit. Mike was staying at the same condo, had their own place, Mike is an Executive with Hart Industries at the Hart Aloha Lab in Hawaii, but was in Maui for R and R, and also to meet Jonathan.

The Harts’ and the Davis’ met for afternoon cocktails, and Barbara hugged Jennifer to tell her how sorry she was that Jennifer lost the baby. Jennifer excused herself went to the condo and cried…Jonathan followed her, held her tight and consoled her. Barbara felt terrible, Mike was very upset with her, and said, why did you say anything, did you forget when we lost our baby…no I didn’t forget, Barbara said, I think of him every day and every minute of my life, I know how hard it is. Barbara and Mike’s situation was worse, their baby was still born. Barbara went to her condo and cried, and Mike followed her to console her…what a weepy time they all had. Jonathan called Mike to say they were tired and were having dinner sent to their suite, but would meet them tomorrow, Mike understood, and asked if Jennifer was okay, Jonathan said yes, she is, thanks.

The next morning Jennifer and Jonathan were up early and so were Barbara and Mike, they met for breakfast and planned for a nice trip to the Hart Industries’ Lab. While at the Lab, Mike was careful as to where he had taken Jonathan, but, Jonathan was very observant. One office was closed and Jonathan asked Mike why it was closed, and Mike reassured him that all was okay, But, Jonathan had different thoughts and just let it ride, as he would look into things on his own anyway.

They left Hart Industries and were all going to a Luau that evening. See you all later, Jonathan said. Darling Jonathan said, did you notice anything strange about Mike’s attitude while we were at the Lab…he seemed very nervous. No Jennifer said, why…because there is something going on there, and we will check it out tomorrow okay, Jennifer nodded with a yes….but for tonight darling, let’s enjoy ourselves. Jonathan was being funny, and with a remark, he said, don’t we always…Jennifer grinned. Jennifer rested and Jonathan sat in thought.

It was 5:30 pm and the Luau was to begin at 8:00 pm - he went to wake Jennifer with a kiss, but, she was already awake. He sat at the edge of the bed where Jennifer was lying, and they talked about Mike and Barbara…Jonathan had told Jennifer that they had lost a child also, but the child was still born. Jennifer was flabbergasted, she sat upright and said how terrible, I didn’t know that darling. This made Jennifer feel even worse for her actions. Jonathan said, now let’s put this all behind us, and start to have a good time, and make no mention of this again, Jennifer agreed, and she leaned over to kiss Jonathan as she knew he was hurting just as much as she. Jonathan said okay sleepy head let’s get up and get ready, she climbed off the bed and he patted her on the butt. They showered together and dressed. Jennifer wore a beautiful moo moo of lavender silk with pink /white flowered print, and a pink rose in her hair, that Jonathan sent to her for the evening…he dressed in pink slacks, and a pink/white shirt (the same as Jennifer’s print). They both wore white sandals; they looked ravishing. They met Barbara and Mike at the Luau, and they also dressed alike, they all giggled over this, Jonathan joked, aren’t we a handsome bunch. That broke the ice, they all kissed each other they ate, drank, and danced the night away. At 2:00 am when the bar closed they decided to call it a night. When they left each other, Jonathan mentioned to Mike that he wanted to meet with him for breakfast - a business breakfast Jonathan called it - Mike agreed, it would be at the Holaula Dining Room…Barbara said to Jennifer and we will go shopping, Jennifer liked that, she loves to shop.

When Jonathan met Mike, Mike apologized for Barbara saying something to Jennifer about the baby. Jonathan said oh Jennifer and I talked about it, and it is all behind us, Mike said thanks, Jonathan. Mike, Jonathan said I want to talk to you about what I saw at the Lab - Mike was shocked. Mike said he didn’t notice anything wrong, what are you talking about Jonathan. The closed office Mike, why is the Financial Office closed…I don’t know Jonathan, but, I will look into it when I get a chance. Jonathan said, well that chance will be tomorrow and we will do it together, agreed. Mike said but, Jonathan , I will take care of it, Jonathan said no we will do it together tomorrow…Mike had to agree.
