Balancing

Balancing Back and Forth

One of the most commonly asked question is how do you ride that thing? I usually answer sit and pedal. Although there is a little more to it than that, it is not much more. As long as you keep the contact point, between the tire and the ground, directly under your center of gravity you will not fall off. To keep yourself from falling off the front or back, you pedal at varying speeds. While unicycling, when you begin to fall forward, your centre of gravity is pushed ahead so to compensate you speed up to get the wheel under you, if you begin to fall back you slow down your pedalling. Once a rider becomes proficient these adjustments happen naturally and go unseen.

Going Up and Down Hills

This explains why one has to lean forward when going up hill and lean back when going down. The contact point on the tire is more forward or back respectively.

Balancing Side to Side

To balance side to side you simply shift your weight back and forth above the wheel, or do small, suddle turns to keep the wheel, and contact point underneath you.
