Creation: US 17 appeared in Virginia as an original US Route in 1927. Its endpoints were the NC Line where it crosses now and US 1/VA 31/VA 37/VA 38 (curr US 1 Bus, VA 3 Bus) Fredericksburg. However, the routing in between had some differences from modern US 17. US 17 overran all of VA 40 from NC to Portsmouth, then used Hampton Blvd (curr VA 337) to a ferry to Newport News, then along with US 60/VA 39 to Lee Hall, then over to Yorktown (curr VA 238), then along VA 29 (curr US 17 and VA 14) through Gloucester to Shacklefords Fork, then east along VA 30 (curr VA 33) to Saluda, then north through Tappahannock and Port Royal to VA 312 (curr VA 2) Corbin then north To Fredericksburg. From Saluda to Fredericksburg was a multiplex with original VA 38.
| Adjustments: In 1929, the Port Royal to New Post section became direct over new routing. The previous routing went unnumbered (a tiny part is SR 610, the rest is inside Fort AP Hill) from Rappahannock Academy to Corbin, but Corbin to New Post became an extended VA 50 (today this is part of VA 2). In 1930-31, US 17 was given a direct route between Adner and Glenns over what had been VA 602. VA 29 and VA 30 remained in the old alignment. Today this is VA 14 and VA 33. In 1932, US 17 was routed away from Norfolk. At Portsmouth it turned west to use the James River Bridge near Smithfield. This replaced VA 503 west of Portsmouth. Hampton Blvd. became unnumbered for years until VA 337 came along. Also in 1932, US 17 was given a more direct routing to Yorktown from Newport News over what had been all of VA 515 (curr VA 306 plus Harpersville Rd.) and some of VA 514. The old route remained US 60 to Lee Hall and an extended VA 514. In 1940 or 1941, US 17 lost its remaining multiplex with US 60, eliminating the original VA 306 on Mercury Blvd. The old split off US 60 became VA 306 #2. US 17 was rerouted in Newport News to multiplex with VA 143 to J. Clyde Morris Blvd. in 1960-61. Harpersville Rd. became unnumbered. In 1965, US 17 was extended from Fredericksburg to Winchester over what had been the VA 17 state hwy extension. Posting: Fully posted, except US 17 Bus in Fredericksburg has very spotty posting. Cutouts remain in Tappahanock, Winchester and Yorktown; I have seen error VA 17 signs in two locations: Tabb on VA 134 NB (I know for sure this has been fixed); Saluda on US 17 Bus/VA 33 WB approach to US 17 Bypass (do not know if fixed). Comment: The dead US 17 Bus in Portsmouth is mostly VA 141 today. The Chesapeake US 17 BUS doesn't make much since unless they add US 17 to I-64 and I-664 to Western Branch area, although trucks would avoid a tricky turn at VA 165 in Deep Creek. Southbound car traffic should use US 17 Business. Between Winchester and Warrenton is the only section of normally coastal US 17 which runs through the mountains. US 17 carries Tidewater Trail signage between Fredericksburg and Newport News. Parts were also signed as the Historyland Highway until 1996, along with VA 3. In Chesapeake US 17 runs through the Dismal Swamp, which until the 1980's required that headlights be used in the daytime, it was so dark and dense in there. Clear cutting on the east side of the highway has solved this problem. According to David Thompson, there was an old section of US 17 in southern Glocester Co. that was signed as "OLD 17" until the mid 80's, with an "OLD" sign above a US 17 shield. This was co-signed with a 6xx route. US 17 from the NC line to VA 104 is getting ready to be rebuilt as a 4-lane road a little inland from the canal. Note that in the 1925 US Highways plan, US 301 ran from Fredericksburg to Lee Hall. Most of this route became US 17. |
US 17 ALT Decommissioned
Previous US 17 ALT's: | US 17 ALT #1: Appeared as new routing in 1958. Ran as today's Frederick Blvd. in Portsmouth. In 1960-61, US 17 ALT became mainline US 17. US 17 ALT #2: Appears in the June 1964 CTB Minutes as a proposed (by the Town of Urbanna) route from Gloucester using VA 3 to VA 33, then over to Urbanna, then along VA 227 and SR 602 back to US 17 north of Saluda. The CTB studied, then rejected the idea. US 17 ALT #3: Mentioned in several CTB minutes from 1975 to 1988 as the Bowers Hill-Belleville Connector (Belleville is where I-664, US 17, and VA 164 come together), an at-grade road. In 1988 this proposed route was upgraded to an interstate proposal and eventually became I-664. US 17 ALT #4?: The October 1978 CTB minutes refers to today's US 17 bridge over I-95 at Massaponax as "Route 17A", but this might be in error. |
US 17-1 Decommissioned
Previous US 17-1's: | US 17-1: This bizarrely numbered US Highway appeared in 1927 in Virginia. It ran from US 1/VA 31 Petersburg south to NC below Skippers (on its way to US 17 Wilmington NC). It was assigned to the entirety of VA 24. US 17-1 was renumbered as an extended US 301 in 1932. Today's US 301 ALT was a part of US 17-1. I cannot say why 17-1 was chosen for this route, instead of 317. I also see a scenario where 117 and 217 could have been done to accommodate all of the original 117, 217, and 17-1: US 217 should have extended north to Weldon from Wilson and proceeded along what became US 117 to Virginia Beach. US 117 would have been given to US 17-1. But instead we got the hyphenated version. |
US 117 Decommissioned | |||
Previous US 117's: | US 117: Appeared as an original US Route in 1927. Began at VA 101 (curr US 60) Virginia Beach waterfront and ran west through Norfolk, Portsmouth, Driver, Suffolk, and Franklin before slicing southwest into NC on its way to US 17-1 Weldon. US 117 was a renumbering of VA 121 from NC to Franklin, VA 12 from Franklin to Suffolk, and VA 10 from Suffolk to Va. Beach. In 1932, US 117 was renumbered as US 158 from NC to Franklin and US 58 from Franklin to Virginia Beach, except Suffolk to Portsmouth became part of VA 10. Today in order this is now US 258, US 58 Bus-US 58, VA 337 (Suffolk to Portsmouth), and US 58. |
