"Estampas colombianas" is a nonprofit folklore group which was founded in 1985 in Philadelphia , with the purpose of helping to better understand the Colombian culture and to present a well-deserved positive image of Colombia to Philadelphia, and the Delaware Valley. The actual group is compose of at least 35+ people, three fourth of whom are youngsters between the ages of twelve and twenty-three. One of the goals of the froup is to stimulate interest among the Hispanic yought in their heritage and to provide a constructive outlet for their talent and energy. Although the name is "Estampas Colombianas", not all the members are colombian's. At the present time there are participants from Mexico and Puerto rico and prospects for membership from other nationalities. The director, Margarita Vera and Choreographer, have had much experience with folkloric dance group in Colombia and in Philadelphia, and have been able to raise a predominantly amateur group to the level of a quality dance group. The group prides itself on the authenticity of its performance. It consults experts, books and videos to insure the accuracy of the interpretation. Interest in the group has been generated throughout the Philadelphia area, leading to many invitations to perform at very varied places and organizations. Among them are The Franklin Institute, Thomas Jefferson Hospital, The university Museum, Block paries in several Philadelphia neighborhoods, festival in and around Philadelphia, Penn's-Landing(during Hispanic Heritage Week), the new Convention center. Estampas Colombianas has been the only non-puerto Rican group to participate in the Puerto Rican Parade held anually in September and for the past few years and been awarded second place. Also, for the past several years the group has perfomed at the Upper Darby Center for the Performing Arts, together with other members of the Pan-american Organization called "Raices"(Roots, in english). This program is of particular note in that its bilingual format and informative narrative by bilingual masters of ceremonies aim to involve the Anglo communitity in the rich variety of Hispanic folklore.

The group has shown its social consistency by sponsoring several community service activities. In the past years Estampas Colombianas has organized fund-raisers for needy families who have suffered tragedies and economics hardship. All money collected was distributed to the families and any expences incurred were absorved by the membership. |
