The Julia Butler Hansen Bridge was opened to traffic in 1939. This bridge was added to the state highway system in 1943 and is now part of SR 409. The original southern approach spans were replaced in 1988.
Julia Butler Hansen had represented the 3rd Congressional District and had later been chair of the State Transportation Commission. This photograph was taken in January 2002 with Little Island in the foreground. Little Island is separated from Puget Island by a narrow canal.
