-- Belleville Newspaper dated May 11, 1894 William P. Gray began life in Knox Co., Ohio, Dec 1st, 1828, and died in Belleville May 4th, 1894. Though he had the consumption he lived nearly his allotted time, being 67 years and 6 months old when he died. Mr. Gray was an old settler of this county, and was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him.

-- Homestead Certificate No. 6206 Application 9308 North West quarter of Section Seven, in township four South of Range three west, in the District of lands subject to sale at Concordia, Kansas, containing one hundred and fifty three acres and ninety two hundredths of an acre. Given under my hand, at the City of Washington, the first day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy eight and of the Independence of the United States the one hundred and second. Signed by the President: R. B. Hayes by B. L. Lang, Secretary.

Know all Men by these presents that we, P. S. Carpenter, of Republic Co., KS as principle E.T. Carpenter and Alexander Mc Intyre of said County as sureties, are held and firmly bound unto William Gray in the sum of ($2000) Two Thousand Dollars, lawf ul money of the U. S. The condition of the above obligation is such that the said P. S. Carpenter has this day purchased the E1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Section seven, town 4, range 3 West in Republic Co., KS & said Wm Gray is to have rent from said land duly paid, except 16 acres off the SE corner, including the house & barn for the sum of One Thousand Dollars.

-- The said William Gray is to have room in said barn for one fourth of the crop raised on said land and one span of horses and the said P. S. Carpenter is to give the said William Gray one-fourth of the crop raised on said land each year during his natural life in the crib or granary and also furnish board and lodging to said Wm. Gray and Lucinda Gray during their natural lives in the family of the said P. S. Carpenter. Now if the said P. S. Carpenter shall faithfully perform all the requirements of this obligation then the same shall be void, otherwise to remain in full force and effect.

This contract entered into this 14th day of April 1893 between William Gray of the first part and P. S. Carpenter, E. T. Carpenter and Alex McIntire of the second part: Witnesseth That in consideration of the sum Five Hundred dollars cash in hand the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged the party of the first part hereby releases the said second parties from all liabilities upon a certain contract and bond heretofore entered into on October 3rd 1888 and which contract is recorded in the office of the Register of Deeds of Republic County, Kansas in Deed Vol 17 at page 81 and this release is to cover all claims for past violations as well as any future liability thereon. The said first party further renounces and released all and every claim for damages or any personal claim whatever against said P. S. Carpenter and all claim for any lien upon the east half of the north west quarter of Section seven in Township four south range three West of the 6 -- in Republic County, Kansas. Dated at Belleville, Kansas this 14th day of April 1893 AD.
