Lead Feature:
The lead feature in each quarterly edition will be written by a nationally published
writer on occult subjects. Since our focus is on the evolution of magick and mysticism we
will seek out currently working writers who are breaking new ground in the ancient
traditions or evolving their own work for contemporary western usage.
Feature:
Two to three articles by nationally published writers again with the focus being on new
work, methods, techniques or insights.
Art:
In lieu of stock photography/illustration or commissioned work Tree of Light will use
the existing artwork of known professionals in the Visionary Art field. By using the work
of these artists as support for our feature we will open the publication up to, not only
the literary realm, but the fine arts as well. Each artist published will have available
to him/her a column of text in which to make an artist's statement as well as provide web
addresses and contact information for those interested in their work.
Columns:
Will be written by regular contributors, experts in their respective fields. Proposed
columns to date include: A Magicians Journal - the day to day entries or experiments and
experiences of one (possibly fictitious) magician, Magick and Technology - how are the
tools of the twentieth and twenty first centuries at work in the occult world and how do
we use them? Where Paganism Meets High Magick - where is the line that divides the two,
and are there places that they meet? The New Physics - how close is science getting to
confirming the knowledge of the ancients and what new insights is it giving to the
contemporary magician? Jungian Psychology - how do we use the Jungian system in our
magical practices and is it a microcosmic overlay for our view of the macrocosm?
Departments:
Written by various authors quarterly, a number of small pieces, pages focusing on the
individual tools and disciplines utilized by the magician. Divided into three larger
sections: Magick, Mysticism and News.
Reviews:
Exploring the world of media available for the pleasure and use of the magician/mystic
each quarter we will review new books, music, and web sites to help the discerning choose
from the array of information presented in increasing diversity.
Fiction:
A quarterly presentation of either a new short story or excerpt of fiction by a known
or unknown author as it applies to our field(s) of interest. In addition we will publish
poetry by both known and unknown writers to be interspersed for the readers pleasure
amidst our feature and articles.
Advertising:
This is last but far from least. A significant source of our income will be from our
advertisers and as such, Tree of Light is focused on developing an intimate relationship
between its readers and its advertisers. Viewing advertising as a service to the
readership and a solid readership as a service to advertisers we hope to create a
symbiotic relationship that will be loyal and enduring.
Advertising Breakdown:
National Advertisers - book publishers, television and film distributors, music
labels, software publishers (astrological chart generators, foreign language translators
etc), internet-based retail and services, metaphysical-oriented catalogue/mail-order
houses
Regional Advertisers - occult book and supply stores, suppliers of natural herbs and
essential oils, events (Renaissance fairs, book fairs etc., arts/alternative lifestyle
gatherings etc.)
Types of advertising available:
- Traditional full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/6 sizes may be 4/C or b/w
- Marketplace ads - reasonably priced, b/w, column inch ads for the individual
advertiser/sole proprietor of a small business
- Classified ads - b/w, per word column listings, non-business (groups forming, books for
sale, wanted: white tau robe, etc.)
- Listings - b/w provided free to local bodies and businesses for the purpose of
announcing classes, workshops and local events. Local bodies may publish their calendars
in this space.
Circulation/Distribution
The inaugural issues and most likely the first year will focus on regional distribution
in California encompassing the San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco/Bay areas.
Possessing the largest concentration of ceremonial magician, high magicians, ritual
magicians and mystics we feel that this will allow Tree of Light to build a solid base
from which to grow. We will solicit a subscription base via the Internet and a
subscription card insert in the magazine itself and as such begin building a national and
international following from the start. But by holding the news stand distribution to
regional and limited national and international, we ensure that we don't over extend our
initial capital investment.
