African Elephants in Australia
and New Zealand
Loxodonta africana
Population as at December 2002 – 3 (0.3.)M
EXHIBIT

The only place to see African elephants in Australia or New Zealand is at Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo, New South Wales. There were housed in separate buildings, with the male being kept on his own. I presume that the second barn is now being used for a different purpose as Congo has passed away. The outside exhibit covers about 2.5 hectares, a nice sized area.

THE ANIMALS

Originally there were four elephants on exhibit at Western Plains Zoo. The male elephant, Congo was a wild born animal who arrived at the zoo in 1983. As a youngster he starred in the movie, ‘Hatari’ and he died at the age of 42 in November 2000.

There are currently three female elephants living at Western Plains.

  • Yum-Yum. A wild born elephant that arrived in 1978 from Longleat Safari Park in the UK.
  • Cheri
  • Cuddles
