Endangered Animals in Captivity
Because of the alarming number of species threatened with extinction, many zoos have put in place Captive Breeding Programs. These CBPs' are designed to increase and help secure the numbers of endangered species held in captivity. The immediate aim is to ensure that the species will not go extinct if something should happen to the wild population. The ultimate aim would be to restock the wild with captive born individuals. Though their is much debate about the usefullness of this plan, and many would say it was a fools errand as such, it is without doubt that a few species would have become extinct without CBPs. These include:
  • Pere Davids Deer
  • Przewalski Horse
  • California Condor
  • Arabian Oryx
SOUTH AMERICA
  • Andean Condor
  • Cotton-Top Tamarin
  • Emperor Tamarin

AUSTRALIA
  • Playtpus
