The giraffe as a species is not an endangered animal, being common in most
of its range. The Rothschilds subspecies, or Baringo as it is also known, is endangered
with a poulation less than 1000 in the wild. Several of the zoos in the Australasian
Region have decided to specialise in this particular subspecies. There are two main bloodlines in the region. They can be delegated as the New Zealand, based at Orana Park, and the Australian, Melbourne and Perth. These three zoos are the only ones breeding pure bred Rothschilds. There are other giraffes, Giraffa camelopardalis, held in other zoos.< |
