Universe

Hubble image of galaxies in the UniverseHow old is the universe? How did it begin? How has it evolved over time? Although no one knows all the answers to these questions, astronomers and physicists are discovering pieces of the puzzle every day.

The study of the origin and evolution of the universe is termed cosmology. Astronomers have three major tasks in the field of cosmology: to understand how galaxies evolved from the earliest times to the present; to refine and extend the scale of cosmic distances; and to test fundamental theories of the expanding universe.

Origins of the Universe
How old is the universe? How was it created? How has it evolved over time? These are only a few questions about the origins of the universe that have baffled many scientists since the dawn of curiosity.

Age of the Universe
Recently, the Hubble Space Telescope was used to measure the distance to a galaxy named "M100". Based on this distance (56 million light-years), the age of the universe is apparently 8 to 12 billion years. Yet there are stars right here in our own galaxy that are believed to be older than that! How can the universe be younger than stars contained in it?

How Big Is The Universe
The Universe is an enormous almost unfathomable size.

animation of what plasma looks like from space in the aurorae effects The Plasma Universe
More than 99 percent of matter in the Universe exists in the plasma state though nature rarely produces plasma on Earth's surface. Earth's electrically neutral environment is a rare exception. [an error occurred while processing this directive]

As Earth spins through space, it moves through a constant stream of tiny invaders from outer space! These invaders move faster than speeding bullets. They move so fast they're almost impossible to track with normal ground-based radars..
