Chapter 4 - First Day

Taylor looked around the room, surveying the people. “And people think I’m strange,” he thought to himself as he watched a girl wearing a long black skirt, and huge baggy black shirt and black make up walk into the room. She was about the tenth one he had seen like that today. Oh well.

Taylor sat back and watched the people pile in; the only person he knew that had his first period (Algebra) was Justin. And, rather unfortunately for Taylor, Justin wasn’t here yet. So Taylor simply pretended not to notice the rather...umm...”obvious” stares he was getting and the giggles.

When Justin finally walked through the door it was all Taylor could do to not run to him and scream and beg for him to get him out of there. Justin started talking as Taylor smiled tiredly before the bell rung.

At that moment, the teacher walked in. It was all Taylor could do not to burst out laughing. She looked like an old grandmother with a stick. Her graying hair was pulled back into a tight bun and it seemed like her entire face was running away from her.

She stepped in front of the class and began in a strict voice, “Now, class. We will discuss the rules and the consequences of this classroom. Your reward is your conduct grade,” she smiled a tight smile, “Now, to begin with, talking...” Taylor leaned back in his chair and groaned inwardly. ‘Oh God, how am I going to get through this?’

Isaac slouched at his desk. It was only fourth period and already he felt like running out of there screaming. He had survived four hours of death notes, giggling, the typical “I love you!”. This was not a good thing. He could deal with the giggling, but he didn’t like the death notes. So far he had gotten three.

All day it had been the same thing: rules, consequences, and rewards. Not that the rewards took all that long. He felt every teacher was staring at him as though he were another juvie. He hated the student ID (meaning the fact it stated his name, address, and picture) which was basically a sign on his back, ‘I’m Isaac Hanson! Scream NOW!’

There had, however, been a few upsides of the day. It seemed as though everywhere Isaac looked, there were fine girls everywhere. For once, Isaac was beginning to be glad he had hormones. Not to mention that numerous ones were ‘HIH’ (Hansonites In Hiding) meaning they liked Hanson but were too scared to admit it. He didn’t really understand why.

“Isaac Hanson!” Isaac snapped to attention, resisting the urge to flinch back from the face in front of him. The teacher, the first guy one he had had, smiled. “Do you feel ready to come back to earth?” Isaac nodded, trying not to turn red.

The entire class was laughing, or at least until the teacher gave them all a death look. “Now then, we will never laugh when I choose to embarass a student, unless of course I permit it,” the teacher (whom Isaac later discovered had introduced himself as Mr. Johnson) smiled. Isaac smiled inwardly, thinking, “I think I’m gonna like this guy.”

Zac crossed his eyes and stuck out his tongue. Everyone around him laughed. Zac leaned back, contented. He loved this public school thing. He had more people and more attention then even their concerts. Well, not really - there wasn’t really any screaming (unless you counted that incidient in the girls bathroom...)

“So, Zac are you sure you guys can’t have girlfriends?,” Lindsay asked, leaning forward, batting her mascara-coated eyelashes. Lindsay was evidently one of the more popular girls at school, not to mention one of the ones with the most make-up. “I never said that,” Zac claimed defensivly, “That’s just Ike and Tay. They’re just weird. I’m still looking,” he said, smiling flirtatiously back. He was very happy with the fact he could talk to girls without them screaming their heads off.

Zac’s number of friends had grown greatly with his personalty. He knew he had some enemies already but he didn’t care. Judging from the overall student population, he was taller and stronger than most of them. Not to mention he had a bodyguard a phone call away.

“Hey, Zac, wanna come over and play video games Saturday?” Rick asked. Zac shrugged, “Sure,” and the two began to converse over the timing and parents’ permission. At that moment, Lindsay stood up and annouced, “Hey, everybody, my annual party’s next week on Friday.” This was met with an enormous amount of enthusiam, which Zac didn’t understand. He also noticed that everybody was pairing up: girl-boy, girl-boy. He was about to question it, when Lindsay slipped her hand in his.

Zac just smiled and played along, resisting the urge to question it. He found it was kind of nice to hold Lindsay’s hand. He just laughed and pretended to know what they were talking about. He kept hoping someone would just say it. He got his wish...sort of. He was talking to Lindsay when he heard Ben say, “All right...the first make-out party of the year.”
