Epilogue

Escape

Derek Mertz, a security guard for the Tulsa Mental Institution for the Criminally Insane, walked through the dark halls on his usual route.

Most of the inmates were sleeping, some were reading, and others just sat there, staring off into space or rocking back and forth while murmurring strange, uncomprehensible words.

He laughed to himself.

Freaks. All of them are freaks. Except for Claire Hatchett. She's the only sane person here. The only nice one too.

Derek had always wondered why she was in here. She had to have been framed; she was really a nice girl. Pretty with long dark hair. She could never hurt anyone.

He headed toward her cell. He had brought her a gift this time. One of those teen magazines that always had those Hanson brothers on the cover. She seemed to like those.

"Claire! I brought you something!" he called as he walked toward her cell. But when he received no answer, his heart jump started.

What if she's hurt?

"Claire?"

He looked inside the cell. It was empty. Nothing remained inside of it. All her belongings and Claire herself had disappeared.

A note was stuck to one of the bars. He read it with a shaky breath.

"I "checked" out. Tell Taylor I'm not finished with him yet."

The End.
