Tom Daily a.k.a. Tom Counihan was the touring guitarist for The Smoking Popes on the Destination Failure tour and the singer-songwriter of the Chicago band Not Rebecca. His solo debut, Happily Deceiving Culture, was recently released on Thick Records. The album was recorded in his bedroom on an eight track and playing all the instruments himself.

So what was the reason behind recording Happily Deceiving Culture? "When I was in the Smoking Popes, that wasn't my band," explains Tom "which I didn't mind - but in Not Rebecca, I was the principal songwriter and I wanted to get back to writing my own stuff. " Though this is Tom's first solo record, it's certainly not his first experience recording himself or with home recording. "Recording has always come naturally to me. I bought a four-track right after I bought my first guitar - that just seemed like the natural progression." He continues "I always knew I'd be playing music for a long time so it just made sense to document my life that way."

About the album he says - "I was simply trying to write good pop songs. That's my only concept. I really respect bands like Guided by Voices and Superchunk, bands that are really prolific and just bang out the core of the songs without worrying about the details, it's about how it feels. I just want to write songs that feel cool."
