The Tenth House

10th House (natural ruler Capricorn, natural planet, Saturn)

The 10th house is about structures and hierarchies. This house concerns the individual's career, their social status and ambitions. It is about the manner in which someone strives to reach their goals. How they climb the ladder of success, that is if this house indicates an interest in making advancements in career or society. It also shows how the individual behaves when in the company of what he might consider to be his superiors, this could be in any area of life, at work, perhaps in the company of professionals (doctors, lawyers etc), in their religion or just life in general. This is why this house represents the disciplining parent, often the father.

This house concerns worldly success and that includes the persons attitude to employers and those in authority. Does the person resent their employer? Or do they get on with them very well? Or perhaps they try to ingratiate themselves a little TOO much! Perhaps the the boss doesn't even know they exist. Maybe the person prefers it that way. Is the person ambitious? Do they have a desire to advance themselves socially? How do they present themselves to the outside world? The Ascendant represents the personal image, that is how do we normally appear to the world. Whereas the 10th describes the image we present in 'special' circumstances... when we are aiming to 'impress'!

Besides their reputation and social responsibilities, the10th house also shows the persons sense of discipline. Are they self motivated or do they need someone to keep them inline? Do they resent any form of control? How do they administer discipline both to self and others?

This House can be a guide to the career or profession. The sign on its cusp (M.C.) describing the kind of work that it would involve. If it were an air sign it can suggest that paperwork (computers) and or communications would be important in there work. A water sign could indicate nurturing, caring professions, or some kind of major involvement with liquids. Earth signs may could indicate professions of a practical nature or one in which finances or material possessions play a significant role. The Fire signs can indicate active and creative careers, those that need the person to take a few chances. The affect of the Quadruplicities can also shine light upon the types of career that will attract. Cardinal signs will are those that lead, organize and initiate new beginnings. The Fixed signs are stable, reliable, controlled and/or require determination. The Mutable signs are changeable, movable and flexible, more than one career is possible, perhaps even two at the same time.

The 4th House is opposite to the 10th. That House relates to personal life and home. Whereas the 10th is about life outside of the home, the career, social status and ambitions. The 4th house is about where we come from, the 10th house is where we aim to go to.
