The Third House

3rd House (natural ruler Gemini, natural planet, Mercury)

As the child grows it learns to speak and it becomes more aware of the local environment. It is no longer only me, as in the 1st house, nor is it me and mine, as in the second. The child begins to learn how to get on in their local environment. This area includes brothers and sisters, neighbors school life. The child's mental ability and the manner in which they communicate are reflected in this house. It reflects the manner in which we express ourselves as well as our ability to develop our own language. This house can indicate how talkative the person is, and how developed are there language skills. Whether or not they have a wide vocabulary or perhaps they will speak with a stutter or with their hands.

Planets here will refer to how the person relates to their local environment. Their relationship with their siblings and neighbors. It will reveal attitudes and occurrences linked with getting about in that environment, thus we have short journeys, bicycles, cars, busses and trains. The school is a part of the early environment of the child, this house will indicate the attitude to school and learning as well as school friends, which are often unlike any others we make in life.

Opposite the 3rd house is the 9th. The house the contends with further learning, college, university, other cultures, foreign countries, languages and people. It relates to the higher mind, and therefore religion, beliefs and the universe. Where the 3rd house is local, the 9th house will take you to the edges of the universe and beyond, the 3rd house relates to mundane, common knowledge, whereas the 9th refers to all knowledge, everywhere.
