Inu-Yasha is the main character, obviosly. His name literally means 'Dog Demon', even though he's only half demon. Because he's half human (his mothers side) He turns human on the night of a full moon, and when he does, he loses all his demon abilities, and his hair and eyes go darker.
Inu-Yasha was in love with Kikyou, a woman who protected the Shikon No Tama, a stone which had great power (enough to make Inu-Yasha a full blooded demon, as well as give other demons lots and lots and lots of power!) then one day, Inuyasha *cough* tried to steal the stone, (to become a full blooded demon you see, because that would give him alot more power, and considering how powerful he already was....) and Kikyou was forced to seal him to a tree. However, she died from wounds she got from Inuyasha during thier battle.
50 years late, Kagome woke Inuyasha up from his 'eternal' sleep (when he first saw her he thought she was Kikyou) and released him. Kikyous sister, Keade, then put a necklace on him that drags him forcefully to the ground whenever Kagome says "SIT!" It's quite funny when she does.
So, soon after he's released, Kagome shatters the Shikon No Tama, so they need to go and collect the shards.
