Anime Terminology

Here are some basic anime terminology. Hey you gotta know these words to be an anime fan.

Anime- Animation made in Japan, also known as "japanimation".
Some examples of it that you may have seen on TV are Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon. There are many anime for all ages and in all genres of movies/series. (horror, comedy, romance, adult, drama, action/adventure, etc.)
Baka- Idiot. This word is used very often in anime.
Bishoujo- Handsome young woman.
Example: Ayanami Rei in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Bishounen- Handsome young man. Many of the male anime characters are described using this word. The male anime characters that are given this title usually have feminine features: long shining hair, long eyelashes, and big eyes.
Example: Nuriko in Fushigi Yuugi.
Doujinshi- A comic/manga that is drawn and written by someone other than the original creator of that manga.
Example: A Dragon Ball Z doujinshi would be drawn and written by someone other than the original creator. But it would use the characters in Dragon Ball Z, the basic character design, and basic storyline, but it would have a new story, written by the doujinshi artist.
Dub- Foreign film/series (like an anime) that has the original dialogue replaced with new dialogue. Anime, and other foreign films are in another language (anime are in Japanese), so they translate the dialogue into another and voice over the original.
Fanart- A fan of anime/manga that draws the anime/manga character as the subject.
Fanfic- A story written by a fan of anime, using anime characters and the basic premise of the original story.
Kawaii- Cute. It¡¯s not the way you consider a guy to be cute but as in a kitten or a baby to be cute.
Manga- The word manga means "motionless". Manga is a Japanese comic book. A manga usually has a colored cover and the inside is in black and white.
Mecha- Big machines/robots usually piloted by people. It comes from the work ¡®mecha¡¯nics.
Examples: Evangelions (Neon Genesis Evangelion), and Gundams (all the Gundam series)
Original Anime: This is very much like an anime fan fiction, but it¡¯s something that is new. It¡¯s a whole new anime story but not based on anything. That¡¯s where the ¡®original¡¯ comes from.
Otaku- This term is used to describe someone who is obsessed with it. Some people may misunderstand it and call themselves an ¡®otaku¡¯ but in Japanese this word means nerd.
Seiyuu- Japanese term for voice actor/actress.
Sub- A foreign film (like an anime) that has subtitles at the bottom. The reason is obvious: If you don't know the language you need a translation.
Shojo anime- Anime or manga targeted at girls.
Example: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, Fushigi Yuugi
Shonen anime- Anime or manga targeted towards boys.
Example: Dragon Ball Z, Street Fighter, Patlabor.
