The Movie Dubs
Sailorsaturn

By Sestuna

Okay, so this is kind of premature, with the SuperS movie still not released in English anywheres. however, I do want to talk about the two previous movies, Sailormoon R and Sailormoon S. First, let's cover some background. A long time ago, a company called Toei produced a television show named Sailormoon. It became very popular and gained 200 episodes, some specials, and three movies. Then, stil a whiles back, a company named DiC dubbed the first season and a half of Sailormoon, making it Sailor Moon. At least at first, this dub was a big hit. I don't blame it, it was interesting, well dubbed (it was!), and had a good plot line. However, the dub failed in popularity and many discovered the original series and became Purists for it. The DiC released 17 newly dubbed episodes, which hit badly with most of the series fans. Not me, I was happy to see more episodes that I didn't have to read subtitles to understand. Then, everything kind of died for a few years (well, one year). The show went off the air, a number of fans dropped it, and lots of stuff went stagnent. Then came the announcement of legal subtitled versions of the movies, and then dubbed versions! Yay! People online who knew of Sailormoon were interested. People who saw it in stores were interested. And now, to help the dwindling fan base of Sailormoon, new episodes are airing. ^^; Andt he old ones are showing Fridays and Sundays on YTV. ;) Anyways! To the dubs!

The Sailor Moon R movie, Promise of the Rose, impressed me. I loved hearing the original Sailor Mars again, and that added conversations that helped to explain things that weren't explained in the origianl was wonderful. Generally, of course, more conversations were just plain nice. Things were explained, and it wasn't a direct translation, whish was nice. All-in-all, I have no problem with the R dub. Except for Serena, whose voice was a little too off to keep me happy and not cringing. Well, it's forgiveable.

It's the Sailor Moon S movie, Hearts in Ice, thjat sort of got to me. Well, it had it's great points, like how Sailor Moon's voice had fallen well back into her role (I was so happy) and Luna's love story was nice to know of through the voice of her English VA, rather than her Japanese one. I mean, the crying scene no longer sounded like Luna was hacking up a hairball, which it kind of did in the original.

So, you ask, what are the bad points? One, the translation. It was too directly translated, with basically the same speeches as in the original, word for word. Himeko and Kakeru's names remained the same, as did Princess Snow's (well, it makes sense for her). Two, the voices of the Outer Scouts (senshi in the original). Does anyone else feel that roles were doubled for certain, uh, voices? I mean, the VA list in the credits isn't large enough to cover even all the scouts (senshi, in the original). It just felt that two certain outers had the same, er, voice. Three, the attacks for the Outer Scouts were okay. Except that "Pluto Deadly Scream" reeeeaaalllly scared me. The other two were fine. ^^; Four, the Snow Dancers. *shivers* Sorry, but with their Ei-yi-ei-ei-yi-yi!-ing, they should have been named the Snow Xenas. Just give them wigs that match Lucy Lawless and tall them to Ei-yi-ei-ei-yi-yi their hearts out. -_-; Truthfully, it was mainly the Snow Dancers that annoyed me. ;)

Well, it's a short rant. But it's a rant! ^^; And now you know my thoughts on the two movie dubs so far.
