  • EPISODE GUIDE 01 - 13

/ ANGEL ATTACK - The year is 2015, the world's population was devastated by a "mysterious" event known as the Second Impact. This event was caused by an Angel (unknown entities with extraordinary abilities). To prevent a possible Third Impact, NERV (a secret organization that reports to the UN), creates synthetic, humanoid, fighting machines called Evangelions. Only a handful of 14 year olds (known as "The Children of Light") can pilot the Evangelions...all of the born 9 months after the Second Impact. Gendo Ikari, the seemingly stone-cold commander of NERV sends for his son Shinji to Central Dogma to be the pilot of the Eva Unit 01. Shinji thought that his father has finally decided to make amends for leaving him all those years, but he was devastated when Gendo just wanted to use him to pilot the Eva. Even thought Shinji was reluctant at first, he finally decides to pilot the Eva after seeing a seriously injured, Rei Ayanami, who is the pilot of the Unit 00 and First Child. Misato tries to make Shinji more comfortable and is getting rather fond of him, even though Shinji is a rather quiet individual.

/ THE BEAST - Shinji struggles to control the Unit 01 amidst a battle with the Angel, Sachiel. Sachiel shows no mercy and badly damages the Eva. Shinji looses consciousness and the Eva goes into its first "berserker" mode of the series. Shinji regains consciousness in an infirmary, where Misato tells him that he is a hero.... however this does very little (if at all) to make Shinji feel better. Misato then takes Shinji in as her new roommate (making her his guardian). However, Shinji soon finds out how much of a slob (and a drunk) Misato is. Shinji also meets Pen-Pen, Misato's charming penguin companion. They have a small housewarming party together by having a small "feast".

/ A TRANSFER - Shinji seems reluctant to pilot the Unit 01 and seems to isolate himself from others. Ritsuko tells Misato that Shinji has a problem called "The Hedgehog's Dilemma" (In which a person does not want any contact from another person because he or she might end up being hurt, similar to hedgehogs not being able to get close to each other due to their sharp needles). Despite this attitude of his, Shinji starts to attend the Shin Tokyo 3 Junior High. However due to his "Hedgehog's Dilemma", Shinji hasn't made any friends yet. By answering a message he got on his laptop (they don't use books much anymore I guess), his classmates find out that he was the one piloting the Eva. One of the students isn't very pleased (Touji...along with Kensuke. Although Kensuke didn't feel the same way towards Shinji as Touji...actually he was fascinated about him being an Eva pilot ) with this and socks Shinji after class. Shortly thereafter, an Angel attacks Shin Tokyo 3 so everybody in the city has to go to the evacuation shelters in the mountains. Meanwhile, kensuke convinces Touji to view the Eva and the Angels battle. However they get a little too close to the action so Shinji had to let them in the Eva cockpit. After the Angel has been defeated, Touji realizes all the weight Shinji has on his shoulders and wants to apologize for his actions earlier that day.

/ HEDGEHOG’S DILEMMA - The pressure becomes unbearable to Shinji so he tries to run away from Misato, NERV, and pretty much his responsibilities. He catches a train and just contemplates...and contemplates.... and contemplates some more, until the trains last stop that day. He then runs into Kensuke, who is camping out in the wilderness. He learns about Kensuke and decides to spend the night there. Around daybreak, the NERV security personnel catch up with Shinji and took him back to NERV. Once there, Misato scolded him (even though she feels bad for doing that), telling him that he could be killed by an Angel with his attitude and that he can just leave if he doesn't want to pilot the Eva. Shinji then tries to do just that and goes to the train station once more. Touji and Kensuke then show up along the way and Touji tells Shinji to sock him to even things out for what he did to him previously. Shinji socks him and the NERV security told him to go already. Meanwhile, Misato speeds off to say goodbye to Shinji. At the train station, Shinji does not board the train, making Misato very happy.

/ REI – BEYOND HER HEART - This episode tries to give you a sneak peek at Rei's mind and lifestyle. The episode opens 22 days before, with Rei testing out the Unit 00. Everything seems to be in order until the third phase came along and the Eva went berserk and smashed through the control room window high above. Rei was fortunate to be able to eject. Gendo rushes to the capsule and burns his hands on the extra hot handles of the entry plug. Ritsuko suspects that the test failed because Rei's mind was unstable. Meanwhile, Shinji feels rejected after seeing Rei get more attention and affection than he does. This sparks his interest in his fellow Eva pilot. At NERV, Ritsuko discovers that the Angel's composition is 99.9% the same as humans. Later on, Shinji volunteers to give Rei her new security card and "accidentally" stumbles and falls on her right after she just got off the shower. Meanwhile, the Fifth Angel appears over Shin Tokyo 3 and it was described as a floating fortress. Gendo does not permit to let Rei fight as he feels that she is not 100% yet, so he sends Shinji in the Unit 01 instead. The Angel fires a strong beam at Shinji's Eva and looses consciousness once more.

/ SHOWDOWN IN TOKYO 3 - Ramiel, the Fifth Angel destroyed anything it considered a threat that comes within its range. Misato decides to use a prototype weapon called the "Positron Cannon." However, in order to fire the cannon, the "sniper" has to be at a certain distance from the Angel. Also in order for the cannon to be charged up, all of Japan's electricity must be shut down. While the cannon charges, the Angel attempt to drill its way down to Central Dogma, breaking through all of its protective barrier plates. Meanwhile, Rei brings a recovering Shinji a meal at the infirmary. She also tells him their mission briefing. And while Shinji is once again reluctant to pilot the Eva, Rei says, "I have nothing else." This causes Shinji to get over his hesitation. During the mission, Shinji fires the Positron Cannon but fails to put it away for good, so he has to wait again till the barrels cools down. The latter shot alerted the Angel and starts firing at Rei and Shinji. Rei jumps in front of Shinji with her Shuttle Shield. However, the Angel is very strong, so the shield will only hold up for 17 seconds at best. Just as the shield was about to "kick the bucket", the Positron cooled down, enabling Shinji to fire once more, this time taking out the Angel in the process. Rei's Eva slumps to the ground, causing Shinji to rush out of his Eva to open the super-heated plug with his bear hands as his father previously accomplished. With tears streaming, Shinji tells Rei to stop saying that "she has nothing else", and tells her to smile (for once) and she does.

/ THE HUMAN CREATION - Shinji is frustrated about how much of a slob Misato is. He also discovers that the reason given to the people of the world about the Second Impact was all a lie, and was actually caused by an Angel exploding for "unknown" reasons. Ritsuko also informs Shinji that the sole purpose of NERV was to prevent a probably Third Impact. Meanwhile, a private organization made a robot (called "Jet Alone") that would supposedly make Eva’s a thing of the past. Misato and Tisuko show up at the demonstration just to see what's so special about "Jet Alone." Unfortunately, calamity strikes again during the demo, causing the robot to go out of control, walking continuously while its nuclear reactor was starting to overheat and explode, causing a massive explosion. Misato volunteers to stop the robot by manually overriding its computer within the robot itself. The man responsible for the creation of the "Jet Alone" finally gives in and tells Misato that the override code is "HOPE." Shinji (in the Unit 01) hesitantly drops Misato (because he is afraid of what might happen to her if she happens to fail) on the robot. It turns out that the code given to her was false. Luckily, disaster was averted once more at the last second. This causes Misato to think that the whole even was a set-up. Later in the day, Misato attends Shinji's parent-teacher conference. Shinji's peers tell him how lucky he was to have a guardian as pretty and cool as Misato (along with other hormone-induced comments). On the way home, Shinji tells Touji and Kensuke that they wouldn't be saying that if they knew how she really was. Kensuke replied that he is lucky because Misato shows him a side of her that she would not normally show other people.

/ AUSKA STRIKES! - Shinji, Kensuke and Touji come along with Misato by helicopter on the UN South Pacific fleet (the biggest fleet in the world). It is here when the audience (that would be you) is introduced to Asuka (pronounced "ASH-KA") On board the main ship, Misato has an argument with the Admiral when he referred to the Eva’s as merely a "child's plaything." He also states that he will not release the Eva on board that ship until they get to the port of New Yokosuka. This of course makes Misato grind her teeth in frustration. It is also on this ship where we first meet Misato's old flame, Kajii. Misato is deeply embarrassed when he blurted out and asked Shinji " Is Misato still wild in bed?." Shinji is puzzled when he mentions this (poor kid! ^_^). All of a sudden another an aquatic Angel has been spotted attacking all the ships (Gaghiel). Despite the UN Fleet's strength, the Angel's AT Field is simply too strong for them. Asuka then insists on Shinji piloting the Eva with her, but also tells him that he better not try any "funny stuff" with her in there. A dangerous plan by Misato puts the Angel threat away and suspects that the Eva 02 must have attracted the Angel, but in fact it was after the package Kajii was secretly delivering for Commander Ikari (ADAM). Asuka ends up going to the same school as her fellow Eva pilots, Shinji and Rei.

/ BOTH OF YOU DANCE LIKE YOU WANT TO WIN - Asuka becomes the most sought-after girl by the boys at Shin Tokyo 3 Jr. High, receiving lots of attention and love letters each day. Meanwhile at NERV, Kajii attempts to seduce both Ritsuko and Misato. Asuka tries to show off by attacking the latest Angel by herself, causing the Angel to split into two and swiftly kicks both Asuka and Shinji's arses, embarrassing themselves and NERV. Misato and Ritsuko came up with a plan to defeat the Angel by doing a synchronization attack on both sub-Angels. In order to prepare for this Asuka moves in with Misato and Shinji's apartment. Shinji and Asuka have to live and act as one for the next few days, but both of them doesn't seem to get along. Misato then suggest that maybe Rei should replace Asuka after seeing how Shinji and Rei work much better together. Asuka then insists that she will try harder so she makes more of an effort to get along with Shinji. They choreograph themselves to a classical song as part of their training. Eventually the two are in sync even with their tooth brushing and eating habits. On the day of the ensuing battle, both Shinji and Asuka perform flawlessly. However, after that ordeal they are back trying to take each other's heads off.

/ MAGMA DIVER - Asuka develops a crush on Kajii and flirts with him while he is escorting her at the mall, saying how exited she is about their class field trip to Okinawa (located south of Nihon). Her hopes are turned to dust when Misato tells both Shinji and Rei that they can't go because they are on "permanent standby", just in case an Angel decides to wreck havoc on Shin Tokyo once more. Later, an Angel in its embryo form is discovered in a volcano full of lava. After contemplating a bit, it was decided by NERV that it might prove more valuable to capture the Angel embryo and study it instead of killing it like they usually do. However, is agreed that if they can't somehow subdue the Angel, then they would try to kill it instead. Asuka insists that she must do this mission and eventually makes up her mind about it despite some wardrobe problems. The Unit02 wore a special suit called "Type D Equipment" in order to protect it from the volcano's extreme temperatures and pressure. Once in the lava, Asuka reaches the Angel and begins to bring it up. Unfortunately, the Angle then grows and starts to attack Asuka. With her knowledge of thermal expansion, Asuka defeats the Angel. With this however, Asuka's lifeline to the world above snaps, so Shinji (in the Unit01) had to jump in to rescue her. As the sun sets, Misato, Shinji, Asuka and Pen-pen go to the hot springs for a rather awkward Shinji moment.

/ THE DAY TOKYO – 3 STOOD STILL - There is a mysterious power failure at Central Dogma (which is odd to for that place to begin with) and Shin Tokyo 3. What little power is left is diverted to keep the MAGI computers running. This catches everybody at NERV off guard. The lack of power hinders the 3 Eva pilots (Rei, Asuka, and Shinji) from getting to NERV when an unexpected acid-spitting Angel arrived at the scene. Gendo organizes everybody to manually (mostly using man-power) launch the Evangelions. Once the 3 pilots get to Central Dogma, Ritsuko tells Shinji that Gendo did this because he has faith in him, and that Gendo knew he would pull through by getting to NERV on time. Once the Eva’s are launched the 3 children come up with a plan to back each other up while the Angel is killed using an Eva machine gun/Rifle just as it was attempting to spit its way through Central Dogma.

/ THE VALUE OF A MIRACLE IS… - Misato has a flashback about her experience during the Second Impact. In it, her father selflessly puts her in a protective capsule, sparing her from the Second Impact. Misato then realized that even though her father was not always there for her, he loved her nonetheless. This hate she has towards the Angels is the main reason she joined NERV. After the flashback, Misato is promoted to Major. Touji and Kensuke notice the extra stripes on her collar right away, unlike Shinji or Asuka. Because of this both Touji and Kensuke organize a little celebration for their favourite Major. Meanwhile at the South Pole (now a even more a wasteland) detected an Angel on the Earth's orbit. Misato sends Shinji, Asuka, and Rei (in their respective Eva’s) to intercept the Angel before it even gets near Shin Tokyo 3. Their plan was risky, but somehow it all works out at the end (of course). Shinji is happy that afterwards that his father actually congratulates him after the ordeal. Of course good ol' Misato gets her share of praising as well.

/ LILLIPUTIAN HITCHER - The Eva’s were conducting their occasional testing when an Angel takes over the NERV's computers. The Eva’s are rendered useless while the Angel itself is becoming more and more powerful, turning into a powerful organic computer. Its goal is to eventually obliterate NERV's MAGI computers (needless to say that NERV would be crippled without its help). The Angel wants to self- destruct the MAGI, but its 3 components (Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar) must all agree with each other first. Just as Melchior and Balthazar were taken over, Ritsuko quickly steps in and tries to rewire and reprogram Casper in order for the MAGI to be saved. With only seconds to spare, Ritsuko finally succeeds in her attempt. She then explains that her mother made the MAGI and she incorporated her different personalities when she was programming the three MAGI Computers. She also reveals that Caspar is her mother's "woman" side, and she was never really fond with that part of her.
