Cody

Linda's beloved Toy Poodle who was diagnosed with SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration) in 2007

Cody, Mr Cool

Cody has always been an unusual dog. You could never hug on him in less he wanted you to, except for me. I could always do anything I wanted to with him, he was always my shadow, every step I took he was right there. He would bite you if you reached for me if he didn't know you and it took a long time for him to get to know you but it was always on his terms, once he did he loved you forever. I blame this on my granddaughter because she was always carrying Oakee over her arm like he was a baby doll, Oakee loved it and Cody hated her for it. She dropped him a few times and he has never forgot it and I think that was the reason he was that way until he got to know you. I could take him to the Groomer or Vet and he was a perfect dog. but not if you came to his house. He! he! or his yard. Cody was a healthy dog except for his back problems which I am sure my granddaughter helped some.

On Good Friday of 2007 I handed Cody a treat and he acted like he couldn't see it, I moved my hand from side to side and he could only see on his right side and would follow my hand. My heart broke on the spot. I called my son crying and told him Cody couldn't see and he thought I was joking. I cried all night, this was like one moment he could see and the next he couldn't. I took him to Banfield the next morning and they ran blood work on him and she told me she couldn't be sure but she thought he had SARDS because all his blood work was fine and she could find nothing wrong with his eyes. She told me I needed to go to Med Vet because they could run tests and tell me for sure. They confirmed it was SARDS. They don't know what causes it and there is no cure for it.

The one good thing was there is no pain to SARDS. I thought mine and Cody' s world was going to end. How was I going to take care of a blind dog. I didn't have a thing to worry about. Cody never stopped doing the things he always did except chase Oakee and chase his toys. He was a dog that would wear you out throwing the toy for him. Cody bumped into a few things along the way but he never gave up going up and down the stairs. He is still my shadow.

He is now a very calm dog, totally different then what we were expecting him to be. He is just amazing how he does things and you can't fool him for a moment. He never got depressed, he just went on as normal only at a much slower pace. I put his goggles on him when we go for a walk because I don't want him to run something into his eyes. He likes the word "at "when he is about to run into something new. He will stop as soon as I say that. That must be my favorite word that I didn't realize I was saying to them since they were puppies.

Cody goes every 6 months for his eye check and the test for Cushings since some dogs with SARDS seem to get that. So far he has been fine. I just want everyone to know that some dogs never change a lot when they go blind. To think about putting a dog that has gone blind down is just plain cruel in my opinion. Cody is a happy healthy blind dog that you can't hide anything from because he will find it. It still hurts me to see him this way but he doesn't seem to have a problem with it. The only thing that was hard when he first went blind was that right before and for about a month afterward he drank a lot of water and peed a lot. I guess all SARD dogs do that but it does go away after a while. I hope one day they find a cure.

Hunting for my socks that I hide from him in the bathroom.
He is a sock dog. No way he knew I put them there.
Remember he is blind and they also were clean. He is very smart!

Cody loves to walk on the treadmill
