I thought that Slayers: The Motion Picture was rather impressive for a TV/OVA (original video animation) series's theatrical debut. There are some overly sappy scenes and like all TV/OVA based movies, the plot seems overly dark and dreary, but otherwise the film's story is well written and rather fast paced which gives it the feel that it is like most anime on TV. All technical elements of teh fillm are of the cinema quality and I could not help but to enjoy teh traditional animation style used and cameos by characters from other series. Besides for the great story and appearance, one of the best aspects of this film is that its themes maybe a little more mature that a typical Disney animated film, but they are not overly intelligent of offensive to a younger audience. I would say the majority of the film is equal to TV-Y7 animated shows like the Tenchi Muyo! episodes that have been edited for Cartoon Network's Toonami afternoon line-up. If you want an excuse to see Slayers: The Motion Picture, say it is to entertain a younger sibling. Why not try to recoup some of the expenses to see this film and use it to distract kids you are babysitting? You can use these recomendations, but you do not need an excuse to watch a good animated film. |
