Benjamin Pyatt

Benjamin Pyatt was born c1845 in Missouri. Some evidence says that this was the son of Benjamin and Avis Eggers Pyatt who was born c1849 MO and some evidence points toward John and Sally Eggers Pyatt whose son was born c1844.

The Benjamin Pyatt from the 1900 census of Crawford County, Missouri, was born November 1844 in Missouri. He appears with his wife, Sarah, who was born December 1849 in Arkansas. This is the same Benjamin who was 20 years younger on the 1880 census with wife, Sarah, who has only aged 17 years since 1880. But, all of the children match up. In 1880 Benjamin said his father was born in Ohio and his mother was born in Indiana. This information matches up with Benjamin and Avis Eggers Pyatt as does the fact that Benjamin lives in the same township with their other children. The only piece of information which doesn't really fit is that on the 1850 census their Benajamin was 1 year old. This Benjamin born c1845 also seems to be the one who was aged 25 on the 1870 census with a wife, Elizabeth, who was born c1852 in Arkansas. It is possible that Elizabeth and Sarah (both born Arkansas) are one and the same person. However, the Elizabeth who was 18 in 1870 is then 33 (15 years older) in 1880. I don't have too many cases of women adding years to their age unless the person aswering enumeration questions made a mistake. I also note that in 1900 the first two children list their mother born in AR while the last two have MO (again, could be enumerator's mistake).

To confuse matters further: There was a Benjamin Pyatt who married Sarah Palmer (both of Crawford Co, MO) in Crawford County, Missouri, September 25, 1868, by R M Freeman, MG. So, why isn't there a Benjamin and Sarah on the 1870 census unless Sarah is going by Elizabeth.

So, without the parentage confirmed, I give the following:
Benjamin Pyatt was born November 1844 in Missouri and married first before 1870 Elizabeth ? who was born c1852 in Arkansas. I do not have a marriage record for this couple that I can match up with them. Benjamin married second, before 1880, Sarah ? who was born December 1849 in Arkansas. I am not certain who was the mother of Benjamin's second and third known child.

The known children of Benjamin Pyatt:

Benjamin and family were in Cuba P O, Osage Township, Crawford County, Missouri, for the 1870 census:

This family was enumerated #35/35 pg 666. Also in Osage Township were the sons of Benjamin and Avis Eggers Pyatt; William Pyatt and Daniel Pyatt. John and Sally Eggers Pyatt were in Union Township.

By the 1880 census he appears with wife, Sarah, and family in Osage Township, Crawford County, Missouri:

This family was enumerated vol 10 ed 58 sh 14. The last two mother's birthplace entry possibly incorrect. Living nearby were Sarah Pyatt (widow of John) living with her daughter and son-in-law:

By the 1900 census they appeared as follows in Osage Township, Crawford County, Missouri:

This family was enumerated at 26/9/2/82. The 'Mary' from 1880 is 'Sarah C' on this enumeration. One of them could be misread. I am surprised at the large gap in age between James and Benjamin. Also, Sarah's age does not agree with the information on the 1880 census. She was only two years younger than her husband in 1880 and five years younger in 1900. Notice that she held her age to 50 years. If the 1880 age is correct, she might be the 'Sarah E Pyatt' who died in August of 1928 (the informant didn't know her birthdate or father) and who was born in Arkansas. She was removed to Martin Cemetery, but, I show no inscription for her tombstone (if she had one).

I do not have the 1910 census abstracts for Crawford County, Missouri.

By the 1920 census, Benjamin had died. Sarah and two sons were enumerated as follows:

This family was enumerated 8/12/19/30. The ages do not match up well with previous census years. However, I do not know of another family with this combination of names that this could be. Perhaps this census entry was particularly difficult to read. This family receives the award for the greatest variety of spelling of their surname.

The death certificate of 'Sarah E Pyatt' which might be a match to this Sarah is as follows:
