Simeon A and Clara Hackney Piatt

Simeon Augustus 'Sim' Piatt was born in March of 1849 in Johnson County, Indiana, to Benjamin F and Ann Carter Piatt and died in 1929 in Saskatchewan Province, Canada.

Sim appeared with his parents in Bartholomew County, Indiana, on the 1840 census; on the 1850 census of Blue River Twp, Johnson County, Indiana; on the 1860 census of Jackson Township, Shelby County, Indiana; I do not find them in 1870.

He married first, October 16, 1872, Jasper County, Indiana, Minnie Keener who was born April 24, 1855 in Indiana to Jacob and Lucia M ? Keener and who died April 24, 1902 in Jasper County, Indiana. I don't know in which county Sim and Minnie married or it might point me toward the family on the 1870 census. Minnie is buried in the Sandridge Cemetery, in Jasper County, Indiana. She married second in Jasper County, Indiana, on December 21, 1879, Cleaver Darwin Braskette. Evidently, she and Sim divorced before that time.

Sim and Minnie had the following two children:

Sim married second on April 8, 1880, in Shelby County, Indiana, Clara E Hackney who was born c1855 in Missouri.

Sim and Clara had the following known children:

On the 1880 census in Hendricks Township, Shelby County, Indiana, we see Ann with only Simeon and his new wife Clara still at home and with Ann disabled as follows:

In house 278 on the census lived one of Sim's brothers, Estelle Leonard Piatt, his wife, Laura, and daughter Alva.

Sims two children appeared with Minnie and her new husband as follows on the 1880 census of Union Township, Jasper County, Indiana:

It appears that William also appears as a ward of his grandfather, Jacob Keener, in Union Township as follows:

The only Hackney family in the area to which Clara might belong was:

There are some inconsistencies with Clara not fitting 'neatly' into this family. She was born in Missouri - they appear to have no Missouri tie. She claims both of her parents were born in Indiana.

On the 1900 census of Indiana - Shelby County - Shelbyville - Addison Township, Sim and family appear as follows:

Some of Dee's information comes from E. L. Piatt of Rensselaer, Indiana and Mavine Piatt wife of Leon Piatt. Also from Shelby County, Indiana marriage records.

Simeon died in the province of Saskatchewan in Canada. Dee has Maxine Piatt's letter and she mentions a Charley Piatt that lived and died in Canada and an Ike that lived in England. She says Simeon was dad Piatt's half brother and he did not know he had a half brother. It states that her father-in-law's parents (Simeon and Minnie) were divorced when Leon was a small boy. Said she had info on a Pierre Piatt. Possible she sent that info to Lynn White as Lynn forwarded her letter to me as Simeon was a brother of my William Carter Piatt. She also mentions Daniel's family but never gives his parents name or any other information on Daniel.

Piatt Newsletter 8:85 lists deed of sale from Jacob Keener to William J Piatt - wonder which county?

A photo of Sim with his parents and two of his brothers appears in the PIATT FAMILY PHOTOGRAVURE, Volume 3, issue 1, February of 2000 which can be purchased for $14 from Joan Piatt Lauer and mail to 4223 Tacoma Avenue, Fort Wayne IN 46807.
