When Rowland of Montville finds beautiful Bridgette de Louroux in the woods, he takes her for a runaway slave and returns her to the estate she has fled from. Bridgette's hopes are crushed as the warrior takes her back to her home - a home where her new stepmother treats her like a servant, held captive from any outside help.
