Sucevita (soo-cheh-VEETS-ah), the last of the great monasteries to be built in Bucovina. This is a view of one of the citadel towers. (June/July 1998)

The beautiful frescoes on the Sucevita church, depicting both biblical scenes and historical battles, were painted by two brothers in the late 16th century. (June/July 1998)
If you look closely, you can see the graffiti that defaces many of the lower frescoes. Much of it is Cyrillic characters, carved by Soviet troops while they were "protecting" the monasteries. (June/July 1998)
When Stefan cel Mare suffered a terrible defeat in battle, he came here to find solace and advice from a wise hermit. The cave, near Putna, is now a shrine. (June/July 1998)
