Did you like the way my Fish Aquarium or the way my Vivarium was set up and would like to try it your self?...
Well then I can help you with a few guide lines.
Fish Aquariums
An African Cichlid Setup
- is much easier than any other setup. You would need: A tank that would fit the size of your fish(usually around 30 or higher), Filters, heater, water conditioner, some type of Substrate(sand or gravel), and some type of décor such as large rocks. African Cichlids like Hardwater and High pH, so that means any kind of rocks can go in with them. Rocks for an African Cichlid Tank are so important! In the wild where these fish come from, are all surrounded by rocks and sand. They live in them! So placing them into your aquarium would help the fish fall right at home. Sand is a good substrate inless you want an under-gravel-filter which in that case you would want to pick a gravel that would match your rocks that you picked for your tank. First you would want to place the substrate in then place your rocks in the way you want them to look. Then had the water. Once you've done that you can let your tank run for 24 hours and get your starter fish. Once everything is completed and you are completely ready to get your fish for your habitat, one word of advice LISTEN TO THE PETSTORE ASSOCIATE about the fish! Petsmart is a good place and then your local petstore that carries a good selection of rare and unique fish. Make sure to pick your fish wisely. Make sure there are no sores or fungus on the fish. Also make sure it doesn't have fin rot and that it swims properlly. Then make your choice. Go around to a bunch of petstore and get there input on things to make good decissions. A South American Cichlid Setup
- is a little bit different than a African Cichlid setup. You would need: A tank large enough to fit your fish(usually a 55 or bigger b/c these fish get big or just plain need the space!), Heater, Filter, Water Conditioner, Substrate(sand or gravel), and of course the "décor" to finish the touch(such as large rocks, fake or life plants, and for some fish, most importantly Drift wood). A lot of the Actual South American Cichlids like their water to be more acidic than Central American and African Cichlids. Discus and Angels(both form South Amer.) especially need Acidic water b/c they need a low pH. Oscars(SA), Pike Cichlids(SA), Severums(SA), Convict Cichlids(CA), Fire Mouth Cichlids(CA), Green Terrors(SA), Red Terrors(SA), Red Devils(CA&SA), Peacock Bass(SA), and Parrot Fish(Hybrid) can live in a lil more basic(higher pH) water than the others, but not to high. Plecostomus and most of your Catfish come from South America so they can fit together very well. A filter system on these fish, is extremely important. So pick the highest Quality(a few brands: Aqua Clear, Fluval, Proaquatics, Marineland, and any type of wet-dry filter.)filters you can find. A good note too is when you buy a filter and it says for, lets say, a 50 gallon aquarium and you have a 50 gallon. Then pick one that is the next step up! Its really promising! If your going with Discus, you will have to have a heater that will be able to heat your tank to about 86ºF. Most other South American, Central American cichlids will be fine with 76º-86º. The substrate for a live planted aquarium should be gravel. Or a mixture of gravel/dirt/sand. You would also need special plant lighting if you get life plants. If you pick mostly South Americans your tank should have drift wood, plants, and if you want a few scatterd rocks. Life is a good idea b/c it helps with the acidic water especially for Discus, Angelfish, and Rams. But fake would be just fine for a South American tank of big aggressive Oscars, that is if your fish would leave them in the gravel! There are many ways to play with setting up a South American tank. When picking your fish once you have got everything ready, you should watch out for the same signs from the African Cichlid setup. But Discus, Angelfish, and Drwaf Cichlids(like rams, and small south american cichlids) can not go with any other Cichlid B/c they will become lunch! But just about everything else can live with oneanother!
