Dian Cecht
(divine physician)
< Previous----Next>
This face was inspired by a Celtic coin made in Gaul in the 1st century B.C.
The subject is unknown, but the acutely sensitive and intuitive eyes allow
us to imagine that it could be the divine physician healer Dian Cecht (pronounced
dien kext). Dian sang his incantations over a well so that the mortally wounded
could bathe in the waters and be healed. This well healed all injuries except
decapitation. When the king lost his arm in battle, Dian made him a silver
arm which could function like a real arm. However, his compassion did not
make him immune to professional jealousy. When his son Miach replaced the
arm with one of flesh and blood, Dian killed him. As Miach’s sister
Airmed mourned over the grave, the healing herbs of the world sprouted from
her falling tears. Made from glazed red earthenware clay, the back of this
limited edition piece displays the artist's signature stamp and the LQP chop
mark, 2" high.
