Fierce Bull
(strength, instinct)
< Previous----Next>
The head of this bull was inspired by an image on an early Greek vase, which
was simplified by the artist and fleshed out with an entire body. The strong,
fiery temperament of the bull earned it a deep association with the sun in
many ancient societies. Primarily a masculine father of the herd, he also
had lunar feminine undertones because of his crescent-shaped horns. Vestiges
of ancient bull rituals survive in today’s bull-fights. These contests
symbolize the superiority of human intellectual and spiritual faculties over
brute force and instinct. In Jungian psychology, this is interpreted as the
struggle against the beast within. Made from glazed red earthenware clay,
the back of this limited edition piece displays the artist's signature stamp
and the LQP chop mark, 1 1/2" high.
