Figures in Community
(kinship, affinity)
< Previous----Next>
These figures are inspired by the art of Papua New Guinea. Human figures were
often portrayed on shields, presumably to enhance protection for the one who
wields the shield. As each tribe stylized the figure in its own distinctive
way, its common aesthetic preference created a bond among its group members.
This bond transcended artistic preference to unify the group’s core
values. The three figures together here represent part of a deeply connected
community--perhaps friends or a family, or a caregiver mentoring children.
Made from glazed red earthenware clay, the back of this limited edition piece
displays the artist's signature stamp and the LQP chop mark, 1 5/8" high.
