Macha
(white mare goddess)
< Previous----Next>
Macha was the Irish name for the Gallic Celts' goddess Epona. She was associated
with the horse and was the first mother goddess of the Celts. Horses represented
great fecundity and sexual prowess. After Macha's husband boasted that she
could outrun the fastest horses, she was forced to race the King of Ulster's
horses, while heavily pregnant. She won the race, but collapsed at the finish
line, giving birth to twins, and then dying. Made from glazed red earthenware
clay, the back of this limited edition piece displays the artist's signature
stamp and the LQP chop mark, 1 7/8" high.
