He is a striking contrast to Jonathan Taylor Thomas' friendly performance. . Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn witness a murder over a treasure map, and Muff, the town drunk, is accused of committing the crime. Brad is a natural for the role of Huck Finn; this was in many respects the role Brad was born to play. His laid-back yet intense style suggests someone ready to explode at any minute, and when he does (when he throws the knife, for example) it's amazing to behold.
There, they see Injun Joe (Schwieg) murder Doc Robinson. They run and decide to sign an oath to swear they will never tell a soul what they saw. But things get tricky when the next day they see the whole town of Hannibal accuse the innocent town drunk Muff Potter (McShane) of killing Doc Robinson. The two boys don't want to tell, for they fear Injun Joe will kill them in a second. Yet, they feel they can't let Muff hang for something he didn't do.

Huck, for example, thinks of Tom (with his basically bourgeois background) as a "respectable" boy while he himself (the son of the town drunk) is "low-down. " Perhaps the most glaring difference is that Huck simply hates the public attention that is described as "food and drink" to Tom. But there are many signs of how these two figures were somehow twinned in MT's imagination.
