I duly subscribed to it, and it clogged up my mailbox every Monday. But the magazines piled up, practically untouched, in my study. And like a fetishist who visits a lingerie store every month to pick up a new pair of cherry-red, lacy undies, I am devoted to the object of my desire. When The New Yorker arrives, I gingerly open the plastic covering and brush my hand across the table of contents, saying the title of each article in my mind as if I were reciting the rosary. |
