Mountain Communities Reading Group
How the Group Works
We read one selection at a time, alternating fiction and nonfiction. Poetry is considered fiction. We meet twice a month, first and third Wednesdays, at 7:00 PM at a location to be announced (in Frazier Park, California). If you would like to participate, please email Alan Nicoll at the address shown at the bottom of this page.
Selection Criteria
The books on the reading lists have been selected with the following criteria in mind:
- Importance: Books selected are considered important to read, important for a "liberal education" and/or "cultural literacy."
- Readability: This group is not a school, so the many important but unreadable books, such as the works of Kant and Hume, are not included. All books listed here are considered likely to be very readable and entertaining to the general reader.
- Availability: Books selected for this list should be readily available through the Kern County Library System, with multiple copies (at least 4). We'd rather not have to buy books.
