IN A MEDIUM MIXING BOWL BEAT BUTTER OR MARG. FOR 30 SECS.   ADD 1 C. SUGAR, BAKING SODA, AND CREAM OF TARTAR.   BEAT UNTIL WELL BLENDED BEING SURE TO SCRAPE SIDES OF THE BOWL.   ADD EGG AND VANILLA TIL WELL COMBINED.   BEAT IN FLOUR (as much as you can) WITH MIXER THEN STIR IN REMAINING FLOUR.   COVER AND CHILL FOR 1 HOUR.

COMBINE 2 T. SUGAR AND CINNAMON OR NUTMEG IN SMALL BOWL.   ROLL DOUGH INTO SMALL BALLS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A WALNUT OR SO.   ROLL IN SUGAR MIXTURE TO COAT.   PLACE ON UNGREASED COOKIE SHEET 2 IN. APART.   BAKE IN PREHEATED OVEN: 375 DEGREES FOR 10 TO 12 MINUTES.

MAKES ABOUT 3 DOZENS GREAT COOKIES.
