June 2000...
June 2000
June brought us SoCal San Diego and trips there that were boring. The close calls all of the sudden became an integral part of TRL, and the first thing announced. There was the big conspiracy over the Movie Awards and the fact that they were ALREADY taped when TRL broadcast "live" from them. Simply put, I very much dislike MTV summers and the big corporate crap. Sometimes there’s 3 pop girls (Britney, Christina, Jessica) AND 3 boybands on ONE show. But then there’s always Korn and Eminem to balance it out. And June was the start of the “Cinderella story” of Papa Roach (Carson mentions that enough).
Special Note: From June 13 or so to June 22, Angelfire somehow lost/deleted those results. Just one of its many problems. Anyway, that commentary is gone, including when I ranted about being in summer school when my friends were on a road trip to San Diego randomly meeting Blink-182. It sucks, but the countdown is still there.
Thursday 6.1.2000
10 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
That shirt she wears has got to be one of the ugliest things.
09 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
Will make it to retirement
08 "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg
“That there is a real music video” - Carson
07 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
06 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
Remix… with Foxy Brown… no comment.
05 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
The song sounds exactly like the upbeat, crazier part in “Cowboy”
04 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Tour opening acts: A*Teens, Innosense, BBMak (now THAT’S funny)
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Lyric of the day: “I’ll be the one, to hold you, and make sure that you’ll be all right, ‘cause my fear is gone, and I want to, take you from darkness to light”
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
The arrogant “it’s gonna be me” lines by Justin are SO freakin’ scary, especially at the beginning
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Notes:
- Jessica Simpson debuts
- Announced: Korn’s 61st day
- Summer Tour News: ‘N Sync (and Sisqo), Britney, Christina & Destiny’s Child, Tattoo the Earth (oh, who knew that already? … not Carson), Up In Smoke (Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg/Ice Cube/Eminem), Summer Sanitarium (Kid Rock/Korn/Powerman 5000/System of a Down/Metallica)
- World premiere Busta Rhymes video: “Get Out”
- Yet another day of doing stupid stuff on the beach. And it’s not like it’s all THAT bad, but it’s so boring in addition to being stupid.
No TRL on Friday 6.2.2000
Monday 6.5.2000
10 "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg
09 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
On the bridge, she’s the only girl standing up in the jeep… it looks funny. The other girls don’t even look like they’re having a good time, and she’s all excited and standing?!
08 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
07 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
06 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo f/Foxy Brown
It’s finally summer, and he goes and changes his summery video into one that’s not.
05 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
04 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
The lady blowing fire? Whoa, that’s weird.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
“Nick never really looked cuter” - Carson
02 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
01 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Okay… so ‘N Sync’s in my city for TWO concerts today and tomorrow… and ALL I freakin’ hear on the radio is about it. It’s annoying and that’s about it.
Notes:
- MTV Movie Awards 2000 Week begins
- Close calls: "Adam's Song" by Blink-182, "Graduation" by Vitamin C
- Breckin Meyer visits
Tuesday 6.6.2000
10 "Big Pimpin'" by Jay-Z
This definitely is the "Milk Box" version. The first line of the real version is SO fun to sing… and it's just a little different in the video.
09 "If Only" by Hanson
Have you heard these boys whining about how BSB and 'N Sync aren't really "boy bands"? My god, get a life and credibility.
08 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
07 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
06 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
05 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo f/Foxy Brown
How exactly is he on tour with 'N Sync AND hosting a daily show on MTV?
04 "Oops!... I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Who else is sick of puns on the title of this song? Not necessarily on MTV, but like in everyday conversation. It's getting annoying.
03 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Wow. Slipped TWO whole spots. Some girl won tickets and offered to take her competitor for those very same tickets with her… that's cool. Really.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
"Thank Heaven for Kevin" That one's REAL creative.
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Notes:
- Close calls: "Breakout" by the Foo Fighters, "Get Out" by Busta Rhymes
- Announced: Sisqo's 61st day
- World premiere Eve video: "Get It All"
- Random promos for the 2000 MTV Movie Awards. Okay... something's up. I HATE MTV's big corporate side. Like they can get it past us that the awards ceremony wasn't already taped on Saturday. And that, even though Justin from 'N Sync would be HERE in my city today (unfortunately), he was also in LA waiting to perform there. Right. Something's up and I'm wondering if TRL "live" from there on Thursday hasn't already been taped. Meaning that the countdown wouldn't be genuine… Hmmm.
Wednesday 6.7.2000
10 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
One of the few girl pop stars who don’t change clothes during their videos.
09 “I Disappear” by Metallica
First song they recorded exclusively for a movie soundtrack.
08 "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg
07 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
06 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
05 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
04 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
“Yeah, yes it is.” All breathy.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Some girl on the phone actually did a shout out to Brian Littrell… ‘cause she “loves him SO much”… that’s pretty cute, if you get passed its obsessiveness. :)
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Let’s show Justin and JC a LITTLE more; I don’t think they get enough coverage
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Notes:
- Close calls: "Back Here" by BBMak, "If Only" by Hanson
- HOW THE HELL can they have a contest for Movie Awards tickets when they’ve ALREADY BEEN RECORDED?!?!? What’s going on with TRL/MTV and why are they trying so hard to trick us? (Wanna know why I know they’ve been recorded? I saw it on one of those “Extra!” or “Access Hollywood” shows. They showed the whole red carpet thing, told the Best Movie winner and Best Actor… yeah basically it already happened.) So unless today’s TRL was for some reason recorded last week (which would NOT be a good thing either), this is a huge gimmick… and it pisses me off.
- This day last year: Snoop Dogg talks about his collaboration with Tommy Lee
Thursday 6.8.2000
MAJOR THANKS to tC for sending me the results after my power went out... some people are SO awesome...
10 "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child
09 “I Disappear” by Metallica
08 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo f/Foxy Brown
07 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
06 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
05 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
04 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
03 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Justin is one UGLY doll. Joey, on the other hand, improved in his doll stage.
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Number one “even from the Movie Awards” - Carson... what in the world does that mean?
Notes:
- “Live” at the MTV Movie Awards 2000 [[we all know the truth… and frankly it really does piss me off]] tC's version of the opening in light of this fact (heehee it's funny): "Wednesday on TRL, we came *live* to you from SoCal Summer, the 'crap-o-matic' central spot that we're staying at all summer long. I'm Carson 'this show should be live every' Daly, and this is
Thursday's Total Request Lie."
- Close calls: "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit, "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
- Beyoncé (Destiny’s Child), Verne Troyer, Aaliyah, Sisqo, Chris, Lance and Justin from ‘N Sync, Chris Connelly, Ananda visit
- Korn's video retired (65th Day) See statistics.
- Reader commentary on the whole SoCal Summer (I love it when I’m in agreement with people!) Thanks to tC:
1; 90 minutes is too freakin' long for TRL
2; I hate the new show openings. It sounds stupid, but the TRL and
Jams, Return-o-Rock, SayWhat, etc.... all had awesome show openings
and transitions before. Now it's crap.
3; SoCal summer is boring-boring-boring-boring-boring
4; The freakin' SoCal summer invades the entire network..... it bothers
me that they have to plaster San Diego over the network 24 hours a day.
5; Why not just stay in NY?
Visit his computer/music site www.tc3x.com
- Ya know what sucks? I was already pissed off at myself for missing the #10 due to crap I was doing, but I’m sitting here actually doing a BIG site update (not just updating the top 10), and the goddamn power goes off. And not just in my house, but in my whole neighborhood. IT SUCKED. And in the hour it was off, I found out exactly how dependent on technology I am, and it’s scary. There was no lights, no TV (no TRL), no computer, no refrigerator, and worst of all (I’m reminded of a System of a Down song), there’s NO MUSIC. So anyway, my point is that I missed the majority of the countdown, and most of the Movie Awards guests. And there was no recap (I’m guessing ‘cause it was pre-recorded). I'll see what I can do... but blame the power.
- Carson forced Verne Troyer to switch seats with him: “You are now sitting next to Fred Durst and Christina Aguilera” HOLY CRAP that was funny. Good job Carson.
Friday 6.9.2000
10 "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg
09 “I Disappear” by Metallica
“I would love to have my children experience all the things that I do and not just think that daddy sits on the couch and drinks beer and watches TV for a living.”
08 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
07 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
They made a big deal about her dancing, but they don’t really show her dancing all that much... it’s mainly the dancers.
06 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo f/Foxy Brown
Retired tomorrow
05 "If Only" by Hanson
04 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Favorite school subject Psychology, dream duet with Michael Jackson, taking guitar lessons
03 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
My favorite part is still that whole Dr. Dre thing.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Howie: if I see him with his hand over his heart or giving a peace sign one more time...
01 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Justin in the freakin’ front ALL the time. He even pushes the rest of them down in the end. Why are they standing for that?

08 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
07 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock

Falling too! What's going on?
03 "If Only" by Hanson

08 "Adam's Song" by Blink-182
Oooh, it’s back!
07 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
They want Britney home videos. (P.O. Box 2001; NY, NY 10108) The other day they showed one that was really cool... the girl totally worked so hard on it, with like camera changes and everything. Crazy but hilarious.
06 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
Played guitar at his son’s career day.
05 “Last Resort” by Papa Roach
Oooh, this is cool.
04 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Lyric of the day: “Half of you critics can’t even stomach me, let alone stand me.” Wait, isn’t that the SAME EXACT thing?
03 "If Only" by Hanson
Lyric II of the day: “And all I care about is you and me and us and I…” I like how they sing that.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
MAJOR increase in email/phone percentages today.
01 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync

10 "Back Here" by BBMak
They performed for us... aren't we lucky? No: "There's a feeling inside and we want you to know... Carson's the one with T--RL show." GAG ME
09 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
He ripped off this guitar riff from a Metallica song.
08 "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
TRL VideoScope: A light bulb is out in the wall. The person who noticed THAT pays way too much attention.
07 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
It's interesting the words they choose to bleep out. As if we can't tell what the song's about.
06 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
I wish the vocals on this song would go down a notch. It's sung in a high octave the ENTIRE time. Am I making sense?
05 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
Make Me Bad much?
04 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Christina Aguilera is Carson's and Fred's "bond." Watching this video for the first time together was "ill."
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Fred complaining 'cause he has a song on his new album called "The One." Funny stuff. Renamed "You and Me"
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Lyric of the day: “It made you believe in no man, no cry” What is this? Caveman talk?
01 "If Only" by Hanson
They might be the #1 video, but Zac's drum stick twirling thing is just plain stupid.
Notes:
- Close calls: "I Disappear" by Metallica and "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child
- BBMak visits. Oooh, gotta love those accents. But not the accents while begging.
- Fred Durst unexpectedly visits (and I loved it). News: Fred REALLY goes off on the lead singer of Creed. [[this was unbelievably hilarious]]
- A TRL home video is apparently out tomorrow. Wow, they're milking the popularity of this show. However I am excited to see it.
- Cool update today, huh?

What's going on with this video? What exactly does leaving your picture accomplish? Stupid, all of it.
06 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
05 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
I hate bugs. Hate them. However the bug eye view is cool.
04 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
The clones sit there and nod their heads constantly... it’s annoying
03 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
The cash register scene needs some major work, starting with the cashier’s “surprise.” Each time she has the same reaction. As if she wouldn't get it by the time the fifth one came around.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Kevin: "Well, we want to have a balance, you know we don't want to end up on 'Storytellers' in 20 years all screwed up." [[something like that]]
01 "If Only" by Hanson
Well, last night I accidentally and randomly stumbled upon the reason this video is suddenly #1 all the time. There's a VAST Hanson online underground telling people to vote, and giving explicit instructions on exactly HOW to do so. Interesting... more on this later.
Notes:
- Still in New York... I love it.
- Close calls: "Adam's Song" by Blink-182 and "Californication" by Red Hot Chili Peppers

10 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
Beating the crap out of slabs of meat? What is this? Some sort of crazy male initiation rite? Into what world?
09 "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
She and Jessica switched places today... lowest ever for Britney
08 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
"Britney is an amazing phenomenon and a great girl and really sweet. I could be really good friends with her." Carson follows that up by saying that they are the sweetest in their dimension of music. Poor Christina.
07 "Back Here" by BBMak
OMG she's reading a book called Back Here... and so is he. This is the second thing of theirs that has elicited the GAG ME response.
06 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
Munky: plays a 7-string guitar, real name is James Shaffer, wanted to be janitor when he was little
05 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
Notice how the bass guy goes crazy? It's funny.
04 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Another new TRL "Game"! TRL Yearbook... showed a *cute* picture of Marshall Mathers.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
News: Howie's benefit concert for Lupus. Did you see AJ? THAT was hilarious.
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
There are some amazingly cute moments in this video (think Lance and Justin--when he's not scary). Also some stupid ones. Ah well.
01 "If Only" by Hanson
About the Hanson online community: they have instructions on how to delete cookies so that MTV doesn't see repeat votes, and they have a whole freakin' "Project TRL" to keep them up here. It's the driving force behind their sudden comeback. I don't know what to think... more tomorrow.
Notes:
- Still in New York... TC speaks: Ah, yes. I love New York! Whenever I go there, I hate to leave. Never really did like California, and whenever Carson is in soCal, he makes himself seem too "Cool." Just get rid of the roller coaster opening and whatever that guy says: "Churm, shimmer, shaow, I'm sure there's, I'm sure there's, I'm-su-su-sure there-re's" What the hell is that? When they're in New York, they use the new york (girl waving to MTV building) theme.
- Close calls: "No Matter What They Say" by Lil' Kim and "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child
- The Rock and Wyclef visit. Finish the Rock: "Know your role... and shut your mouth."
- World premiere Wyclef Jean f/The Rock video: "It Doesn't Matter"
- Listbot sucks and didn't send out my update email till today--a full 48 hours after I sent it. I apologize for their problems. Don't let it discourage you from signing up, okay?
- New "ideal" countdowns! And go to the messageboard.

Friday 6.30.2000 10 "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child
THIS VIDEO IS OFF DA HOOK! DAMN! THEY LOOK GOOD IN THIS VIDEO! THE CARS ARE
COOL TOO. ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 I GIVE IT A 9!
09 "Back Here" by BBMak
This is a cool song, but I'm confused by one thing does the girl in the video
want the guyz or not? She ignores them in the beginning and then gives them
the pic at the end.
08 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
The song is really bad, I like Kid Rock, but the song isn't very original.
The only cool part is when the chicks are mud wrestling.
07 "Oops!... I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
What can you say about the hottest girl on the countdown? Did anyone else notice
the planets in the backround while she's dancing?
06 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
When they show you looking through the bug's eyes it's really cool, but other
than that it's looks like their last video.
05 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
The song is great, it should have been on the countdown sooner.
04 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
This was definitely a good song, but I think everyone played it out.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
No offense to BsB fans, but this song sucks (even if Brian did write it) and
the video is really boring, they could have done a a lot better.
02 "If Only" by Hanson
Where the HELL did they come form this week? oh yea, and the part with Zac
spinning the drum stick looks really dumb.
01 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Definitely the most entertaining video out right now. From a guys prospective
though..the barbies in the video look really old and nasty. If Justin and
Britney are going together..why didn't they get her to play Barbie (in a
bikini)?
